Today, as I approached a construction zone, I could see three separate sets of police lights flashing. As I got closer I noticed that one was a Wrangler. The rooftop lights were not one of those stick-on bubbles, it had a permanent light bar, albeit a reduced-sized one. The Jeep also had matching flashing lights (red/blue) built into the grill. The color of the flashing lights matched the other two patrol cars perfectly. If the lights weren't on, it would have been stealthy. And the Jeep wasn't stock, it was a built up Jeep. Four hours later, I went past again. It was still there flashing. I'd say it was an officer's personal Jeep except for the fact that the lights looked permanent. The Jeep was yellow FWIW.

Were the markings city, county, or state?

I don't think it was a personal vehicle; too many legal/insurance issues to get approval for.

Didn't get that close. I turned off before I would have passed through.

One other thing: it looked like it had an angry birds grill - not kidding.

Might have been a PR/Outreach thing. You know, Take it around to the schools, "Hey kids, see how cool the cops are?" I've seen 'em use Corvettes & Camaros for that kind of thing.

The last time I saw a Jeep used for actual Law Enforcement, it was the Border Patrol.

Possibly the Wrangler was a seized vehicle that was modified and deployed for enforcement purposes. I agree that using one in that manner would probably be unexpected by a plurality of drivers.

Some of our local plod use F150s that look as stock as you like, until the well-concealed but bright red & blue LEDs in the grille and across the top of the windscreen are turned on.

In some states construction related vehicles have red and blue lights identical to police cars. Saw some on my trip out West this past summer. Definitely were not police vehicles since the logos on the sides were for something else, but had the same lights on them.

Police in Emerald Isle, NC use Wranglers on the beach, wish I had taken a picture last summer.

The officer had driven up rather quickly and was asking everyone if they had dialed 911. Apparently the iPhone's emergency dialing is easily set off without the user knowing it, but they have to answer all calls anyway...

Edit: Here's a picture via google:

El dorado county sheriffs patrol the rubicon trail in a lifted rubicon. Our stanislaus county sheriffs patrol trails and the local off road parks in lifted rubicon’s as well. I knew the wheeling was different out west, but these little things that have just been common place out here for decades remind me every time a thread like this pops up.

Thanks for all of the replies. Sounds like this is more normal than I thought.

But...what about the angry birds grill? :)

Down in central FL have Jeepin with Judd in Polk County where the Sheriff drives his marked Rubicon around obstacles. Also just next to them is Pasco Coubty who has a volunteer Jeep unit with some marked jeeps.
