Yes, the extension cable is a good option. An additional rear cam can do the job, too.
It is super easy to run the wires behind the dash. It take about 5 minutes to do it. Just jump to the 2 minute 35 second spot in my install video.Using a Bulletpoint gridmount with 20mm ball and extension, attached to a 67 designs mount plate designed for the wolfbox. The mount plate was a little pricey though.
Mine has been mounted with the provided 3M tape for almost a year. It has withstood the weather, hot and cold. I had to bend the bracket back in place the other day as the auto car wash bent the metal bracket. The tape holds way better than expected. I did clean the area prior to mounting the bracket.
Very rarely does the road grime or water obscure mine. I have the camera mounted in the spare tire above the stock camera.
Ted, your videos are what inspired me to mount it on the dash to begin with. Though I don't know if I'm ready to drill into my dash just yet. I have a magnetic phone mount (the other arm) that sits to the right of the center console display and already has a cable that runs down from it. It follows the edge of the display and HVAC down the passenger side and then under the dash. So I'll likely just combine the three cables (phone power, wolfbox power, and rear camera) all together with some electrical tape. And right now I just have the rear camera cable running under the WeatherTech floor mats to the trunk area. In spring when I take the doors back off I'll re-route it properly.
