I went to look at tires to replace the M/T on my willys. The safe bet is 285/70 BFGs ( rubi takeoffs), but I saw and loved,285/75 Toyo open country.
Some say there should no issues on the road, but it may rub off road. Some have also said that if I change the springs to rubi springs they wold be fine.

Any advice on this is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I went with 285/70 Falken Wildpeaks off a Gladiator Mojave. From what I heard, you'd be fine with the 285/75 but may have a little rubbing at full turn or like you said, off-road. The main thing I was looking for was a little more width versus height on replacing the M/T's so the 285/70 was great as it's about half an inch taller and about 1.2 inches wider.

Thanks, that jeep looks Great !. The Wildpeaks or BFGs are a strong probability. The wildpeaks would be my 1st choice (had them on my 4Runner), but there harder to find. The 285/75 Toyos just look amazing - decisions 😕

I have a Willy’s diesel and I just put 35x11.50 on the stock wheels which are about the same size as the 285s and it fits with no rubbing with regular driving… haven’t been off-road yet…

No issue with rubbing on easy to moderate trails. I've since lifted the Willys to be able to tackle some more technical trails and I am having no problem on those either.

Revisiting this 😕 , does anyone know if the spare will fit?

285/70 = 32.71 inches
285/75 = 33.83 inches

approximately 1.1 inches.

My unscientific measurement says there is a Quarter's play at the top and slightly less at the bottom. Again, my unscientific measurement also says that a quarter is 15/16's of an inch or .93 inches. Needing .55 inches at the top and bottom, I believe this should work, but if anyone has run 34s or 35s on the spare tire carrier please let me know.

Thanks

Rubs slightly, but fits. Drop the PSI a little to reach your acceptable level of friction 👍

Big Thanks - the 285/75's fit just fine. Also the ride from the Toyo ATs is SOOOOO MUCH BETTER and QUIETER. Also, thanks for the idea, i did have them drop the PSI in the spare about 6 lbs.

I just bought these tires for my Willy’s JLU and wondering if weight is an issue with the spare. Did you end up reinforcing the hinges?

Nope - Just took a few pounds of air out. Worked just fine. You'll like the tires, MUCH QUIETER & BETTER RIDE than the Firestone M/T.

Yea I'm excited to hear how much quieter the ride will be. I will say I don't hate the factory tires but wanted something a bit larger, quieter but still be able to keep the factory wheels. I did end up ordering a Teraflex HD Adjustable Mount for the rear tire. Trying to find out how much weight that will add over the factory spare mount but haven't found that yet. I also have an Outback Adventures Trailgater table installed on the inside of the gate so I'm worried I'm going to stress the hinges too much after adding all of this.

Did 285/75/17 fit on the stock spare carrier? I also have a JLUW and from what I gather its very snug. Options are to pressure down and/or heat gun and press down on the plastic sport bumper where it rubs to fit it.
