Why would they do this? Every reservoir clear except coolant.

Just pop the cap and look down into the hot radiator like a man!
Agree with simply removing the cap & checking levels. Iirc the fluid reservoirs on my other vehicles are either black or opaque.

I used to own a turbo charged Porsche which had a pump connected to the coolant that fed into the turbo. It stayed on for a few minutes after shut down. That helped the turbo charger from developing coking. Do you guys with the 2.0 turbo have that set up?

Yes. My Eurovan has a pump like that and it's not even a turbo.

In addition to the dipstick, if you stand on the front bumper, take the cap off, use a flashlight, you'll see a yellow tab down in it that has max and min on it.

As someone mentioned, it's black because it's so close to the turbo. Thus a different plastic to keep it from failing too early.

Plus, if you ever owned a BMW (i.e. every e46) the container is black (even on an M3). New BMWs are the same.

All the other reservoirs are white so they needed a black one for political correctness

My wife's CR-V has a 1.5T. A fun little engine. Anyway, the pressured coolant reservoir is ostensibly opaque, so as to accommodate visual inspection. I still can't discern the coolant level without holding a flashlight directly on top of the tank itself. This is likely due to the thickness of the polymer construction required to allow safe pressurization.

The overflow tank on my daughter's [older] CR-V isn't pressurized, and is thin enough to easily observe the level of blue coolant sitting therein.

How often are you guys having to add coolant? And isn't there a sebsor?

I've had to add ~6 oz., once, and only after I checked the reservoir in response to this thread.

As for sensors, I've an analog temperature gauge, with a redundant digital display of the same data on the central TFT screen. If I'm not paying attention to either one, that's my fault.

The 2.0T black radiator coolant reservoir has a yellow cap with a dipstick. Unscrew it and Behold ! The coolant level reveals itself.
Thanks for the info on why it is black plastic for high heat resistance.

So it's, unscrew cap, pull out the dipstick, wipe it off, insert and check it again, screw it back on then dispose of the paper towel.

As opposed to glancing at it while I scan the others.
