Good afternoon friends,

Here in southwest Virginia, many of the trails are in mountains and cell signal disappears frequently. I want to pull the trigger on an Inreach device. I’m curious as to which one you use and if you would recommend it.

Thank you in advance!

iPhone 14 on up or InReach Mini 2 with monthly subscription. The only current clear advantage for the InReach is weather and crumb trail right now.
Inreach Mini 2 is ruggedized for outdoor use, allows you to text and email without cellular coverage, and has automatic location sharing.

Thank you! Unfortunately I’m running a iPhone 13 Pro so that’s no help. In reach Mini 2 sounds like the favorite of the forum.

The mini 2 was the one I was thinking of. Have you had any issues?

I’m a brand new Inreach user so can’t give any long term feedback. Other forum members with more experience can be more help.

What does iPhone 14 or newer do that older iPhone models can’t do…. for navigation?

Any advantage to iPhone 14 or newer if cell service is lost?

Buy a good phone case, you can text with satellite easily. Again, weather and crumb trail are the advantage now with the InReach. With the iPhone 14 and up you can text someone about the forecast for the zip you’re in. Garmin is in a little bit of trouble at least.

The 14 on up has emergency satellite communication now and with the new upcoming update (18?) it’ll have conversation ability and helps you find the satellite.

I wasn’t aware the 14 allowed non emergency texting and emails by satellite
