East Coast - I grew up very close to the Atlantic Ocean and would consider somewhere from Delaware to Florida. I am leaning towards coastal Virginia. While in the USAF my remote overseas assignment in 4 different countries kept me away from the water which I love for a little over 3 years, all I saw was sand and rocks. I did get to see the Mediterranean once for about an hour LOL.

I have lived most of my life in New England, a little in Texas and 7 years in Florida. I would like to get out of New England.

We stumbled into a great place in the foothills of the Blue Ridge western NC. It was a small older log home originally purchased as a vacation getaway. The place needed a lot of work and the more time I spent here the more I loved it. Very rural area but central enough to several larger cities. Liked it so much we sold our 40 acre place on Kerr Lake in Virginia and settled here. The view says it all. Best of all I don't spend 2 days out of every week on a tractor cutting grass.

That looks amazing! I would love to have a place with a view like that.

Thank you for your service! Sounds tough. I like water as well, and for me, I didn’t realize how nice having access was until I didn’t have it. I do prefer lakes to the oceans, though.

Thank you. The assignment seemed like 10 years rather than 3. Most of my time was spent in Pakistan and when we got the chance to go to town this is it.

I was looking at this site a couple days ago. Not sure if I agree with their choices but at least they analyzed the states using the same criteria.

https://choicemutual.com/blog/best-states-to-retire/
This is good to know! Some of the bad ones to retire seemed obvious to me, but I was surprised by some of the best.

Also glad to see Michigan isn’t too far down the list, because that’s likely where I’ll end up longer term because all of my extended family and my girlfriend’s extended family is there.
