If you could live anywhere in the US, where would you want to be?

Please no politics! I don't want this thread to get shut down!

For context, I was born and raised in the Detroit Metro area, and have been bouncing around the country quite a bit the past few years for work. From 2021 onward, I've lived in Detroit, Dallas, back to Detroit (and in Petoskey a bit), and now I'm in NYC.

I've reached a point where I could potentially relocate again at the end of April, and sky is the limit on location, but I'd like to live somewhere that I can hit the trails, hike, and camp within a 2-3 hour drive. I don't mind longer drives for good wheeling, but if I'm closer, I'll get to go more often!

I'm not afraid of extreme weather, but would prefer the snow and ice over 100+ degree heat. Ideally also within ~1 hour drive to an airport to support our work travel (both of us in sales) and 1-2 hours from any ski hill/mountain because my girlfriend is a member of National Ski Patrol. Doesn't have to be the great skiing, but to her any skiing is better than no skiing! (Basically the equivalent of my Jeep addiction ?) And if it changes your answers at all, we're both 26 and this probably won't be our last move, but I would like this one to stick longer than 1-2 years.

I've lived in Idaho, Utah, Maine, Spain, Arizona, and California. Each place has had its pros and cons. The key is to focus on the pros. For owning a Wrangler, so far California has been the most enjoyable. Endless options as far as mountain, desert, rock, and beach exploring, and top off the Jeep 12 months a year.

That's a great point! Haven't spent time anywhere in California aside from San Francisco, so my personal experience is fairly limited. Definitely have plans to hit the Rubicon in the next couple of years, though!

Any suggestions on region?

I am in Southern California. You can ski at Big Bear in the morning and then be surfing in Orange County that afternoon. Our favorite place to offroad is exploring old mines/ghost towns up near Mojave.

Put a visit to King of the Hammers on your bucket list too.

Definitely! Lots of good spots to explore out west.

I don't blame you! A garage of some sort is on my short list, and I've even been looking into eventually building a barndominium so I can have more room for cars, tools, and toys!

That likely won't happen until we're fairly settled and not planning on moving again after 1-3 years, though.

Where has been your favorite spot?

Not sure if you're being sarcastic, but it's not actually as hard as you might think.

I could even move to Knoxville, TN and be near an airport and only about an hour from skiing. It's not an international airport and I can't imagine Tennessee skiing being the best, but I do like the area!

I'm mostly asking to hear everyone's opinions and see if there's somewhere I didn't think of or haven't found yet. All of my wants for the perfect location are definitely just that, wants. I don't have to have all or really any of them, but it sure would be nice if I did!

No, I wasn't being sarcastic. It's different for everyone, but once you find it, you know. But, some of the reasons a person picks a place would also be some of the reasons a person wouldn't post it online, haha!

Good luck in your search. If I were you, and not me, I'd move to Tehachapi, California, and live outside the city limits a little.

Fair enough! I will probably end up back in Michigan at some point as both of our parents and extended families are still there, but I'm sure once we're back, that will be it, and we're not done trying new places and exploring what the rest of the country has to offer.

Just my 2 cents. I’ve not traveled the whole US. But while I was in the service I was stationed at Peterson AF base in Colorado and I said I could easily live there.

I like Texas a lot! Within Dallas city limits (Uptown) wasn't right for us at the time, but I did enjoy working in Plano (Legacy West) and how easy it was to travel to basically anywhere by car or plane! I spent about 18 months in Dallas, just long enough to get used to the heat before heading back to Michigan.

I think Fort Worth was a bit more my speed, and I loved the Marble Falls area when I visited Hidden Falls Adventure Park. Never made it to San Antonio, but I've heard nothing but good things.
