Been reading every thread on here lately and have a question (probably a few)
I make my last lease payment in Feb and am starting to look for the wrangler I want.
If I order, when’s the best time to do that (both deal wise and also alotting for build time as I need a vehicle the minute I turn mine in)
I’m not opposed to bailing on the lease a little early if it’s wiser to find an in stock 19 rather than order or wait for a 20 (I also have a few must haves on the new wrangler that might make it hard to find on a lot.) I’m in Los Angeles btw.
Thanks in advance - I’ve learned a lot here and spend way too much time checking threads ;).

It depends, start doing some research. My local dealer was not giving me a good deal on '18 and '19 JLUR's. After talking to him for a long time he agreed to do invoice price. But then a dealer in Orange County offered me 5% below invoice price for a custom built '20 JLUR.

So it depends, sometimes I've heard about 8,9,10% below invoice price for '18,'19 wranglers, but it also depends on the dealers.

So I just ordered my 2020 from a dealer in San Juan Capistrano who is offering 5% under invoice. This is currently the best deal in So Cal known in the forums. The dealer rep told me it can take up to 6 weeks to get the car in.

Also, dealing with Rob at Courtesy Jeep has been a breeze. No games, just a straight forward 5% off invoice (~10% off MSRP). So you wouldn't need much time to deal. Although I do recommend you shopping around just in case there's a better deal out there. Most people have reported little success in finding a better deal with So Cal dealers in general.

Hope this helps.

Find out what your lease payoff is if you bought it outright today (inclusive of any early buyout fees).
Then take your vehicle to CarMax to see what they'll give you. Granted, the offer is only good for about a week, but, you'll know where you stand.
If the amount they will give you exceeds the payoff, you're in a positive equity situation and you can buy yourself out of your lease.
Order your Jeep. When it comes in, make the trip to CarMax to get the check on the way to pick up your Jeep.

Don't you also have to pay taxes on the buyout? If you are buying a new vehicle, and trading one in, some states will give you a tax credit for the traded in car. But i don't think that this applies if you sell your old car privately and buy a new one.

You're correct, however, he was talking about turning in a lease which would be different from a trade in. If there is positive equity, then you could do a trade and take advantage of the tax savings. If a negative equity situation, you could still do the trade, but, you would need to make up the difference somehow. Each situation would be unique and the net results would make the determination for the best route to take.
What I found with my experiences with CarMax is that they have beaten any trade in offers that I received. The difference between the additional $ that they offered when compared to the tax savings is typically about a wash. If it is a wash, then it's a matter of preference. I have also heard of dealers matching CarMax offers on trades which would result in a tax savings benefit.

Thanks everyone. My buyout and the value of my lease are pretty neck and neck. Obviously I’d like to make it as painless as possible to get out of my lease and into the wrangler. I’m assuming trying to turn in the lease to the Jeep dealer would be a bad idea? I have a 2017 Land Rover discovery sport.
I’ve been thinking of working with the San Juan Capistrano dealer, I just want to have my ducks in order before I start so I don’t lol like a tool. It’s hard enough being a woman trying to talk to Jeep salesmen around here. Last guy told me there’s no diff between a sport s and a rubicon so if I test drove one I didn’t need to drive the other...

And I hope that was the last conversation you had with him!!!

Don't assume that it's a bad idea trying to turn your lease in to a Jeep dealer. If they want the business, they'll assist you with the buyout and get you into a Jeep, but, there might be some fees involved. While some states do provide a tax advantage when trading in (only taxing the diff between the trade value and sale price), I don't think Californistan is one of them.

I would suggest finding out exactly what the buyout would be PLUS any fees associated with an early termination before determining next steps.
