Interesting read. We used it as a precise time source to drive the radar system. It was surprisingly difficult to write an algorithm to track time when the clocks in the hardware weren't very precise. I worked with our astrophysicists to tweak their orbital tracking algorithms to track linear time.

I wonder how well it tracks time when the data source is down for hours.

Paper maps are hard to use unless you know where you are at and which way you are going.

That being said, I like to have at least 2 forms of navigation on trips into the sticks. The current goto is a Garmin GPS and an Iphone.

It is my experience that you are much more likely to experience device problems with a phone or tablet.

I like to prepare for my trips by obtaining GPS tracks for the planned adventures. Often this research finds physical descriptions that are helpful with following directions.

Funtreks.com not only published great books for places like Moab, their GPS tracks are available online. Another great resource is the motorcycle forum, ADVrider. They have a section titled Mapping & Navigation that is as extensive as anything I know about and often includes trip reports form the included tracks. https://www.advrider.com/f/forums/mapping-navigation.37/
