The simple answer is like everything, mileage/emissions/regulation. Having a FAD accomplishes the exact same problem, but requires 0 effort from the consumer to get their soft hands dirty.

This also why my FAD is permanently engaged lol, screw mileage and regulations

With fad the axles still turn. Hubs are better.

My 1974 Renegade CJ-5 had the Warn locking hubs. They did what they were designed to do, plus I never had any failures or issues with them. I wish that I would have kept my CJ-5. It was a real fun Ride off Road.

On my cj I had the warn locking hubs and drove many miles on icy snow covered interstates and two lane roads and never had an issue. Had that jeep 13 years. Should have kept it. Standard factory tires on my cj no lift and it went anywhere I wanted.
It would be nice to have an axle with hubs and no fad a 60 that’s the 68 inch Rubicon standard size. But can’t find one. The fusion semi float 60/40 duo looks good but no hubs unless you go 8 lugs. Then the 68inch comes into play. Some day. lol🤔
Most companies cater to jeepers who build their jeejps and want big tires. There are those that just want improvements for occasional off road and the majority driving is on road. Such is life.
