Just got a used 35k mileage 2021 jlu willys with 2.0 turbo, 8 speed auto 850RE. I’m planning on changing both front and rear diff fluids, and transfer case fluids, and I’m wondering if anyone can tell me what fluids I need. I’m planning on using Royal purple cuz that’s what I’ve seen the majority use so far. But I’m really new to this stuff and wanna treat my new engine-powered vehicular automobile right. Also if you need anymore info on my car jus lmk. Also any tips for doing it would be cool too. Btw went to the dealership and they said I needed to do allat and I didn’t wanna spend 1k on doin allat.

Your transfer case requires ATF+4. The specification for ATF+4 states that in order to be labeled ATF+4, it must be a full synthetic so pick any one.

For the axles, Dana Spicer specifies 75W-140 in both axles. Stellantis reduced the viscosity to meet CAFE requirements (aka improve MPG). Grab some 75W-140 Mobil 1 or Valvoline off the shelf and call it a day.

I would 100% skip Royal Purple. No benefit over the cost versus the off the shelf oils I noted.

Change the oil often and early to remove the wear metals and carry on.

In addition to the well intended and good information given above I highly suggest you get a copy of the owner manual and service schedule that usually comes with the vehicle. Read it from front to back. There’s all kinds of information in the manuals and usually answers most if not all. Enjoy your jeep and have fun. It is not a car. ?

If you keep calling it a car it will have that angry Jeep grill some morning, and it may never go away.

Cool Sounds like I'll just go with 75W-140 for both axles then! thanks! And also one last thing does it matter what axles I have? Cuz based on my research I'm pretty sure the willys has a Dana 44 LSD rear axle, and a Dana 30 Solid Front Axle, and pretty sure that diff axles take diff fluids. Not 100% tho. Also Also last thing sorry but how much do I need for differentials and transfer case, I think 3 quarts for both differentials? And I have no idea about the transfer case.

Does not matter--Dana has specified 75W-140 for all axles that are in a Wrangler.

3QTs should cover both axles--about 1.3QTs in the front and 1.6QTs in the rear. The transfer case should take about 2QTs of ATF+4.

@robbiehall

@CarbonSteel has given you correct info... Indeed, go with 75/140 in both front and rear diffs and do use ATF +4 in the transfer case..

I might add.... I routinely lend an ear to young guys and gals locally that want to do / do their own diff fluid and transfer case fluid changes on their Wranglers and Gladiators.

I learned early on to be sure to be tell them to have more fluid on hand then actually needed for the fluid change out... Why .... well, you are gonna kick yourself in the ass if you are in the middle of the deed and you spill some fluid, have fluid shoot out when you are pumping it in, etc.. and then you do not have enough fluid to do the deed that you are in the middle of.. :headbang:

You'll be a tad nervous as the deeds are new to you.. and good chance you will be a tad messy, spill, have trouble with the hand pump , etc... Very normal for a first timer lets say.

With that said .... For your 2 diffs... Do order and have 4 quarts on hand. Yes, 4. If you don't use the 4th qt., then leave it for next time.

As for the transfer case... Do have 3 qts. on hand, Yes 3.... before you do the deed. Expect to use 4.5 pts for the Transfer Case. Again, if you spill or squirt or whatever you want enough fluid on hand.
Read here about a hand pump and more... https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/another-differential-fluid-thread.122466/post-2554140

Anyway, please do take heed in regard to what I am saying. Don't get caught in the middle of the deed and oh chitt, do not have enough fluid on hand.

Some hints: Always remove fill plug before you remove drain plug. Do yourself a favor and buy squeezable bags in regard to the diff fluid. Remember, you need a hand pump to get the transfer case fluid into the transfer case.

You can also use this versus a hand pump. The transfer case on the Wrangler is easily accessible and this nozzle fits both small and large opening quart bottles--it has an adapter inside that can be removed.

PS...I agree with @Rhinebeck01--get 1 more quart than you need if this is your first time. I am comfortable with the exact amount, but I can do this in my sleep at this point.
