I’ve got a Rubicon X with the 35” tires and reinforced tailgate. I’m seeing people post pictures with all kinds of things hanging off the rear tire and am wondering why people don’t seem to be concerned about the weight that they are putting on it. I believe the max allowable weight for a reinforced tailgate I’ve seen is 110 pounds. The 35” spare probably weighs close to that.

They are probably the same people who colored outside the lines and ran with scissors in Kindergarten. I think manufacturers often post maximum allowable weights that err on the side of caution and cover their own ass. If you’re concerned and want to add weight there are aftermarket carriers from Motobilt, CavFab, Terraflex, etc.

I've got the Teraflex reinforcement and I'm pretty sure I could strap a piano to my spare tire and the tailgate would still be okay

No sweat, 315/70/C KO2 ~64 lbs, wheels low 30’s (my 7 1/2” beadlock capable 31 lbs) . The Falken MT 285/70 option was ~62 lbs for my pre XR. Teraflex says 100 lbs for my Alpha, no reinforcement. So still close but OK after 59 lb 35/12.50/C’s, you have the Mopar gate but not hinge reinforcement. So you can go a little heavier, but much heavier tires would not be advisable per the numbers.

Terraflex tire carrier, very happy. I opened door on uphill, and it got away from me, I cringed and waited for door to snap off when it hit open limit, nope. Closed fine, xactly lined where it was.

No matter what reinforced hinges you go with, just remember they are still bolted to the tub. The hinges may be able to carry more weight but not necessary the anchor points on the tub.

Edit: 37/38/39 tire + beadlock ranges from 120-140lbs depending on brands. I would not go over too much on those hinges that bolt to the tub. Anything more than that, you really want to look at the tire carrier that's integrated with bumper, where the weight sits on the frame.
