I can confirm to you that Android Auto works fine in our 2018 JLUR with the standard screen. We plug it in the center armrest outlet and voice directions come over the speakers while music is paused. All of our vehicles do this. So is probably your phone or phone settings linking to the onboard system. Test with another Android. We have the Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL.
There's one on the left side of the steering wheel that looks like someone speaking. Push it.
It has nothing to do with the volume of your phone. Turn up the volume of your stereo while directions are being spoken. If the volume is completely down then you'll need to listen for unexpected gaps in the music/whatever where it's likely that directions would be.

i haven't come across this screen yet, will need to search where it is/how to get to itI've run into a couple situations that caused this problem for me. First was turning the Android Auto volume all the way down without realizing it. Restoring it required waiting for an announcement, noticing an announcement was supposed to be happening, and adjusting the volume during the announcement. I learned to force that by having AA read a string of messages to me.
The other thing that I ran into was guidance audio was turned off in the maps app on the head unit. That one's easier to find and fix. Open the maps app to full screen on the head unit, tap the settings/gear icon, and ensure the Guidance audio setting is set to Unmuted.

It's a glitch with android auto. Sometimes I lose the voice mid trip. You can restart your phone, it should start working.
I should probably have clarified that the setting I mention is in the Android Auto Maps app, as opposed to the radio's native Navigation app.
