I don't believe that is right, the base radio in a Sport is not SXM. I know this as I just changed mine out with another one I bought from another member here that is SXM. I had to add the antenna and the antenna wire too, that is kind of a pain as the sound bar and the left side trim panels have to be removed to install the antenna and wire. It is a worthwhile upgrade to get SXM and the display is not entirely "shades of gray" anymore!

I could be mistaken then. I looked on the builder online and you can order the XM package for the base sport Wrangler. I assumed that the package just includes the antenna, but it might be a different head unit also.

Just to clarify...NOT ALL head units (radios) are SXM compatible - you have to have more than just the antenna to pick up and decode the SXM signal.
And even with the Android Auto program and your phone connected via the hard line, the process to send free-form, voice-based texts is not nearly as easy as it was with the Uconnect program the mostly pre-2018 vehicles add. I find the Android Auto is not worth the trouble using to free-form voice-based texts. And even more troubling - I could not use Android Auto to free-form voice-based texts when it was between two phones on a BUSINESS account with AT&T - slight glitch that caused me to (along with other issues) to dump AT&T in favor of Verizon. Oh, the line option to free-form voice-based texts on the head unit display is misleading - it sounds as though it can be done in that format (no Android Auto) but it cannnot. Why not remove that line, FCA? (I've asked FCA Customer Service this multiple times and they don't have an answer - except one rep told me some day soon it would be in an update so it would work like it used to on most pre-2018 vehicles)

Thank you! It drives me crazy that I'm not able to use the voice to text through Google or just the mic when I'm connected using the USB cord. Especially driving home from work I have to charge. So at this point I dont think I will replace my radio. I like using pandora or Amazon and dont mind it being from my phone.

You could just plug it into the rear USB ports to charge, I suppose.

Unfortunately, the voice functionality on the 8.4 (when not using siri or whatever) is kinda useless. I was surprised about that, since the crappy 730n in my JK was actually really good at voice recognition. It was even better than Siri sometimes!

This thread has changed from topic 1 to topic 2.

I too have Android auto. When I am using Android auto there are some voice functions that don't work.

I have learnt from other car brands the problem is Android auto and not a Jeep problem.

Beg to differ - even without Android Auto connected or in-use, the free-form, voice-based texting function (one of two line options) does not function on any newer FCA vehicle.

Hi all..apologies if this has been a thread before. I've had my 2018 JL since May. I don't know any other jeepers in my area that have this issue or are willing to help me...

Found out after I drove it home, after purchasing that I DID NOT HAVE Sirus XM like I was told. Couldn't find anyone to explain or help me understand how to "upgrade" or is an antenna that's needed (plus membership) even after contacting dealership and sales person who lied to me!

My uconnect also only let's me reply back to my text with a few pre programmed replies..why???? So frustrating!!

Is this common? Is it because I have the most basic package? I got the most basic jeep with no power windows because it's what was in my range and really wasn't important. Tips? Advice much appreciated!!
Not all Jeeps come with Sirius XM . You might not have the antenna or it is not receiving a signal .if it's on your build sheet I'd call about it .If it isn't probably not much you can do .

My 2019 JLU Altitude has a factory Sirius antenna, but apparently the radio (7 inch Uconnect 4) isn’t capable. jeep.com says it should be. But Jeep and Uconnect say they can’t help...seems the cant figure out if an sirius xm capable radio would work.

How do you get the build sheet?

Google "get my Jeep build sheet" and go to Jeepsies website and click on the link in step 2 of the article on how to get the build sheet - enter your VIN and they'll show the build sheet. Or, you can go to a friendly dealer who will print one out for you.

Hmm... Google Assistant does a pretty good job understanding the messages and instructions I recite after holding down the VR button (3sec) WIthout AA, the list of pre-programmed messages is pretty basic.

The image attached is a snip from the window sticker for my 2019 Wrangler JL Sport S showing the options that are included. At the top of the list is the Customer Preferred Package 23S, which adds the "S" to the Sport. Also shown is the 7–Inch Radio Group for $995; in this package is Sirius XM with a one year subscription. So, it seems to me that if Sirius XM is shown on your sticker, that means you have it. If not, you don't. No matter what the salesman (who have been known to be untruthful) says.

If you were promised XM you should most definitely have it. There is a special XM radio antenna, its on top of the sound bar. Given that the XM factory option is called "Sound System Components" and is $295 (way more than an XM subscription) I'm guessing that it's possible that this antenna doesn't exist on all Jeeps unless it was selected as an option. You can see it here:

As for the Uconnect preset messages, that's all you get. The system wasn't programmed to allow you to dictate a message like you would be able to with Siri or Google. Should you upgrade to the 8.4" display, you can dictate messages with Android Auto or Apply Carplay, but your phone has to be plugged in to do this.
I have the 7" and this feature, Android Auto, works just fine. I don't think 8" is required.

My Wrangler Sport is the Altitude Edition, 24L. It has the Technology Package ($995), which the Jeep website clearly says includes the 7 inch radio and Sirius XM ( in two different places) among other things. But Sirius is not on my radio... the dealer was even confused until they checked my VIN after I left, and...Sirius not included. I checked other similarly equipped Altitude Editions and it seems some have it and some don't.

So, I'm more irked that Jeep/Uconnect Cares has not offered any remediation or even explanation for the discrepancy...they only say they cannot change the radio due to the apparent wizardry required to determine compatibility.

I feel your disappointment but the Jeep builder online is not the ultimate arbiter of the equipment on your Jeep, the window sticker and the build sheet is. If it is not on the window sticker and you did not get it in writing I’m sorry it didn’t come with it.

You can change out the radio despite what Jeep says. I did. The 7 inch radios do come up for sale or you could upgrade to the 8.4. If you buy one make sure you get the unlock code, you WILL need it! Changing out the radio is a pretty simple swap, if I am right the antenna and wire are present on your Jeep Because it says it is “SXM capable”.
