Hello from the UK.

I have a 2018 Jeep JL wrangler Rubicon that has developed an issue with the U CONNECT system, no power at all. I have been searching to see if I could find an OEM replacement, which is a ridiculous cost new, and then looked at various breakers yards, nothing around. Has anyone replaced with a non Jeep part, and if so what would be a good starting point. Also I am not sure if going this way would limit the functions that are available on a genuine part, like heating controls, climate controls etc. what would I lose by going non OEM replacement. Any advice would be greatly appreciated on a brand, and way forward.

I would like to replace with one that sits behind the cowl in the dash.

Many thanks

Heard a lot about Stinger, but I doubt it will have functions such as climate controls. I would say go for a used screen from eBay. They cost around $800-$900

The new Stinger looks good, as does the links well V5 T style screen, and it has controls for A/C.

If you want a cheap work around, there are some decent auxiliary android CarPlay options on amazon in the $100 range.
I personally have the 5” screen. I found a tablet mount for the JL and use my iPad Pro for my media in the jeep.

I'm about to have a stinger Horizon 10 installed next week, due to similar circumstances. They are supposed to retain all the factory controls on screen. My 8.4" screen died and I've had to figure out what to replace it with, and I went with the stinger. There is an alpine system that integrates into the factory setup, but it's over 2,300. The Stinger is around 1,200, and the install can be quite pricey if you're not doing it yourself.

My 8.4" is beginning to fail as well. It's receiving an input which makes it so if the screen is on apps are just continuously being pushed.

Does anyone know if an OEM replacement is just plug and play? Is there anything else I need to consider?

it’s insanely easy to replace, and yes, it should be plug and play. At first you may not have all of the apps, but just wait and it will sort itself out.

Look for posts about upgrading the 5 and 7 inch to the 8.4. Plenty of how tos, but this is under an 90 minutes of work for you if you’ve never worked on a vehicle interior / infotainment before (that was me upgrading from a 5 to a 7 years ago on a former JL - 8.4 to 8.4 is exactly the same).
