I was coming home from a off road event and my sons diesel JLU started having an issue. we had been driving home for about 6 hours, air temp. was 80 and we were running around 80mph. We stopped at a rest stop and then when we proceeded the Jeep had very little power. 55 was top mph. He had seen this before and we pulled over, let the engine cool for a bit and then proceeded. It went about 60 miles running fine then lost power again. We limped home at 55 the rest of the way. My question is what caused this and how to prevent it. I know he is getting ready to do the DEF delete kit from Canada and he said that will take care of this. I suspect that now after it has cooled down it will run fine today.

Sounds a little bit like the derating issue people have been talking about where there is some sort of overheating happening. I have the diesel but have not yet had the issue.
Personally, and this is debated in the below and other threads, I'm pretty sure it's exhaust gas temperature (EGT) that triggers the derate.
I drove my brother's LC with a reman V8 turbo diesel with a 5 speed. Going up mountain hills in 5th gear will spike the EGT fast, and the solution is always to downshift. It moves more air through engine and requires a bit less of the turbo, letting the EGTs calm down.

Good thread here: https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/towing-with-3-0-diesel.70886/

I’ve heard stories of heat soak causing a similar issue but I don’t believe it comes back after the initial cool down once you’re back on the road.

If he hasn’t already been pulling codes he should get JScan and all the fixin’s to do that. I wouldn’t think a DEF delete would make a difference.
