Hello!

Intermittently, when at a dead stop my manual 6 speed JLUR will shift halfway into first but not fully unless I push really hard, which I avoid having to do.

When this happens, I I shift to 2nd and then into first, it falls into gear perfectly.

After I get it to align into first, it moves in and out of first smoothly

Sometimes when I stop it works perfectly fine without having to do that method though, which makes me feel like it just need to roll into the perfect alignment.

It only gets halfway stuck in first maybe 10% of the time. Not a huge deal but I’m wondering if anybody else knows more about why it may be doing this or if it’s normal

Jeep has 25k miles on it and I don’t remember it doing this before 15k or so.

Change transmission fluid? Clutch going out? Synchros?

Thanks!

That's a sign that your synchros are going out.

It will get progressively harder over the months and years.

Changing out the gear oil in the transmission may help a little. May not.

It's not a thing you need to fix immediately. In fact, you could let it go for years. Just learn to double clutch as it gets worse. If it bugs you, plan a transmission rebuild in the next couple of years.

I have always, as far back as I can remember on any car always double clutched or gone to 2nd gear first before trying 1st gear.
You have to go back a long ways to find a passenger car/light truck transmission that doesn't have a first gear synchro and needs to be double clutched into first.

My '86 Chevy K10 had a granny low first gear with no synchro. But once they went to the NV4500 in the 90s they have had first gear synchros. My 01 Ram 2500 with the HO 5.9 and NV5600 had a first gear synchro.

All my manual transmission cars have had first gear synchros. And they go back more than 30 years.

Thanks for the reply, I think I agree.

I’ve contacted a local transmission mechanic and was told they don’t sell parts for this transmission, and that I need to buy an entire transmission for a part, or just go easy on it/deal with it. Any truth to this? I’d like to have the option to rebuild of course…

Does the warranty cover prematurely worn synchros? @JeepCares

That I don't know. It may be he's just saying that because he doesn't want to do the job. Or it may be that rebuild kits really aren't available yet. Ask around to other shops. Maybe try to find a kit online.

If it's still under warranty, try the dealer and see what they say.

Warranty.

No way synchros should be going already unless you’re phenomenally bad at driving stick (as in slamming gears, skipping gears, not rev matching).

If it only happens occasionally, just release and engage clutch. If it happens all the time, it because you crammed into gear with double clutching as above. And yes, most all trannys have 1st gear synchros, but you preserve them by double clutching into 1st.

The recommended service interval for the trans oil is 30k for hard service. I had the same issue at times.

I am using royal purple manual trans oil now with no issues. Dropping into second with the clutch still engaged before first will get the gears synced up as well.
