From my previous post I tried something yesterday to keep my jeep in 7 and 8th at 70mph. No trailer this time. This is for a 4 door, 3.6l rubicon with 4:10s and 285's at 30psi. Outside temp was 37.
What I did was on I manually shifted to 8th and held it there even on hills and lugging the engine a tad. RPMss remained ~ 1900-2000. After a 1 mile I would shift to auto. After a couple of tries at this, the transmission reacted by going to 7th not 6th on hills and quickly back to 8th going downhills and on flats.
Going with the wind my mileage was a whopping 22.3mpg. Against the wind I was at 17.1. Note against the wind it held in 7th. This was a 240 mile round trip. I averaged 18.6 according to onboard gauges.
I have a 40 mile round trip in the AM I am hoping the same will occur.
Give it a try on yours
