I'm new to this and have two patterns that are .005 apart. Can I get some advice on which is better?

1) .033

You want both the drive and coast wipe to be centered. Kinda looks like .033 might be closer to center but I am not totally sure from the pic on my phone that either are exact center

Both of these look great. .033" looks a hair better, but either will work perfectly.

What is your backlash at? It looks like it could be meshed .001-.002" deeper. You've got a line at the edge of the tooth, which is what you want, but you want it a hair deeper. I'll find a pic for you to reference.

But the pinion depth is spot on. Roll with it, man.

It doesn't need to be super deep, but enough to direct the tooth load into the root of the teeth.

The spec will guide you.

Also, keep in mind that you're trying to adjust two separate curved triangles together... so, any backlash adjustment may require a pinion depth adjustment.

If you have two 0 etch pinions, then leave what came out in it. Then adjust backlash. You're damn close as it sits. I'm just curious what the backlash is right now.

Thanks Chevymitchell for the input. I really appreciated your video series. Gave me the guts to try. Biggest help for a newbie like me was getting $20 air grinder and slimming the front pinion race and the rear bearing so changing pinion depth was easy.

I ended up just going for the middle with .035 depth and .007 backlash. My only concern is that I doubt I have enough preload on the carrier. With stock LSD will that cause problems eventually?

Thanks for the help!

Here's the final pattern.
