So the boy and I were talking (also with some strong suggestions from the wife ...) ...

I've got a medical background, albeit in Medical Imaging (I know how to make people glow in the dark). The topic of CPR came up, and I made the comment that if you're not breaking ribs you're not doing it right. The poor 12 year old just looked at me with this puzzled and shocked look that got me thinking. We're going to be in the woods. On a trail. Potentially hours away from a hospital short of a whirligig finding a good clearing. I know my family tendency to require hospital visits due to stupidity, and it's genetic.

I know we've got some recreational first aid classes that we can sign up for with the local community colleges, and I'm actively looking into those. Are there any dedicated Trail First Aid classes online that y'all would recommend? I'm googling as we speak but would love y'all's input.

That’s not a bad idea! I have one of these First aid kits and one of these Trauma kits in both of my vehicles. I don’t have a medical background but I did go to combat lifesaver school in the military. That was 20yrs ago and haven’t kept up on any of it. After I got out of the army I joined a lll%er group and got back into the first aid stuff. Not long after I got out of the group because their views didn’t align with mine and never kept up with the training. That said, I’m much older and have 5 kids and we’d love to go to an offroad first aid class. My kids will also have those trauma kits in their go bags.

Retired from Corrections....I have stories.
I carry a decent first aid kit. Have had emergency first responder first aid training 29 times and used it often on the Job while working in prison. Why because idiot fight and stab each other all the time and heavy drug users tend to have medical issues more often.

Whit that said, I do carry emergency rescue insurance. If needed, they will come get us with a helicopter pretty much anywhere in the world.

If you are connected to Boy Scouts there is an adult Wilderness First Aid training.

Have taken the attached and refresher's

https://www.solowfa.com/
https://www.solowfa.com/

multiple levels training to choose from

Very intense classroom and hands-on. They will make you sweat and apply your training in stressful scenarios

Basic WFA is 2 very full days 8am-7pm

Choose a good location because some are better than others. We had rolled vehicles and downed planes (real but staged of course) to make extractions from

Cannot enough good about it - myself, wife and younger son all took the level 1 WFA together
