I will soon be getting a 2-door Sport. I plan to install 17X8 +18 wheels with 285/75R17 KO2 tires (true 33's). I do not plan to lift it (yet).

According to TireSize.com, this should result in the tires being 1.86" farther outward than stock and 1.15" closer to the fenders (see simulation image below).

1. Do real-world observations confirm or contradict this theoretical geometry?
2. Will these dimensions (especially the tire being 1.15" closer to the fender) cause any problems?

Tiresize.com is a great reference I use it all the time and I'm not saying the tire you are interested in isn't the size tiresize.com says it is but I would suggest getting on-line and look at the actual tire size per the manufacturer's website. (tire sizes will vary)

For example: 285/70r17 Tiresize.com measurement is 32.7" X 11.2" wide but if I were to buy a Maxxis or Mickey Thompson 285/70r17 the actual tire size for Maxxis is 33" X 11.8", Mickey 33" X 11.5" (see links below) The slight difference in measurements may seem trivial but in some circumstances a little wider and/or taller might be all it takes to make contact/rub. So, when I'm measuring, I make sure I use their overall tire height & width specs from the manufacturer to make sure that tire is going to work for my set up/Jeep.

Overall, I think your set up will work and please allow me to add I think you're definitely on the right track however I think it's fair to say the tire size you're looking at regarding the height and the additional tire poke might be somewhat close to rubbing the fender flare if you're going off-road, on road might be OK. I also think that size tire with no lift may look as they say somewhat stuffed but that's entirely up to you.

I installed 33.3" tires on my stock sport, I originally had no intentions of lifting, but I quickly changed my mind after getting larger tires. If you would like to get a visual idea of what my set up looks like; in this link scroll down to see the before & after lift photos.

Best of luck my friend and please feel free to post some photos and show off your jeep when you get your new tires.

Great info, thanks! I love the look of your Jeep. The extra lift definitely looks a lot better.

A 34-inch tire is going to rub on a Sport without a lift.

Anything bigger than 32.7 inches is going to rub on a stock Sport, Willys or Sahara. At one point I had 275/70R18 (33.2") on my Sahara; they rubbed at full articulation.

By pushing the tires farther out, you are going to rub your fenders with the tread section.

Thanks. Do you think it will only rub with the sway bar disconnected or will it rub with it connected also?

No. On JL, tires rub suspension and steering components mostly due to their width, not their height.

A 285-wide tire should fine. Especially if you are going to mount wheels with a little more offset.

You might want to secure the swaybar when you disconnect it, though. JKS Mfg. offers a nice quick disconnect kit with a built-in pin that mounts atop the front springs. The pin allows you to secure the swaybar when disconnected.
