I am thinking that I’m needing a thermostat for my 2018 JL 2.0. It appears to be sticking I think. The engine temp will get hot and then seconds later it will be go back to normal range. Also the heater sometimes blows out cold air. I have a couple of questions. 1. How can I trouble shoot to make sure it’s the thermostat? I just want to make sure that’s the problem as they are not cheap. 2. I would like to change it myself. Are there any good videos that can help me? Thank you in advance for your help.

Your symptoms sound an awful lot like you have a low coolant level.

They are cheap, and they are also back ordered all the time. The aftermarket, Motorad specifically, are complete garbage and should not be used for any reason ever.

Your symptoms do not add up to a thermostat problem.
Vinman is likely right, check the water pump flange bolts, since it's a 2.0.

So this is new to me. The coolant cap has a dipstick. Do I check it by just sitting the cap back on or do I screw it back on?

Did you ever get this resolved. I am having an issue where the coolant temp increases rapidly when sitting at idle. When driving or if I increase the RPMs while sitting still it operates at normal temp. The coolant level is normal and there are no signs of a leak. I am leaning towards the thermostat being the issue. They are definitely pricier on the 2.0L engine.

spitzer1113 Did the thermostat fix your issue??? I'm on the same boat here, and about to swap out the thermostat housing on the 2.0 Jl.

I would love an update on this as well. I’m experiencing the same issues.
