The JL got two batteries. Does it make sense?

I am a little annoyed at the second battery in the JL. Two batteries makes sense, but to hide one underneath the other one doesn’t. What kind of battery is it? Does anybody know? They are connected in parallel, so how’s is it going to last longer? I must be missing something about batteries because this doesn’t make sense to me.

An FYI for those that don't know there are two batteries.

Yes. That’s what I am talking about. I’m very receptive to new ideas and technology but unless I’m missing something this is dumb.

I wonder if the Turbo has 3 batteries? These 2 plus the 48 volt...

I hope that second battery lasts longer than the standard three to four years I typically get from auto batteries and the Harley batteries which must have a self destruction timer set to two years.

It would have been nice if they had used a super capacitor for start stop. Mazda does that.

BTW, the same guy has a video on how to permanently disable start/stop.

I'd like to know if there's a diagnostic code for when this battery, as opposed to the main one, does eventually give out, apart maybe from a generalized ESS malfunction code.

The way they are connected in parallel, when one fails is going to take the other one. It seems dumb.

Your "diagnostic code" will be that your JLU will not start.

Remember, if the Aux battery is missing, dead,/insufficient charge, the Main battery, even though fully charged, will not start the JLU.

That's how dual batteries are generally set up. If you wire them in parallel you get twice the reserve capacity at the same voltage. If you wire them up in series you get twice the voltage and fry all of your electronics. Nicer aftermarket setups will sometimes include an isolator so that one battery dying doesn't kill both, but generally OEM setups aren't set up this way from what I've seen. One dying battery killed the other on my diesel. Just how it is.

@brandonh can you confirm this? Maybe a good video to continue your battery/ESS/wiring diagram videos

I believe we will find out that JL engineers know what they are doing.
The ESS battery will be isolated, only being used for ESS. (easy to do)
