That article certainly underestimates the cost of modern engines. Most engines, especially anything turbo+GDI are well north of 5k retail nowadays. The 3.6 isn’t too bad, somewhere around 3700.

I assumed prices are much higher post COVID than the article leads on.

You don't think they'll try to "rebuild" it do ya? I bought a new engine, I feel they should replace it with a new engine. Not acceptable for 23k miles on a year and half old vehicle.

I'm far from mechanically inclined. But I'm pretty sure that it didn't sound like that the first day I got it. That video is from last night and I got it back on Monday so about 5ish days. My dad is the mechanic of the family - I'm still learning. He joked asking if they swapped my 3.6 for the Eco Diesel ?

When I saw the video…I thought it was a diesel as well ?

It’s great that you have a good dealership. It will be important to build upon that relationship with the dealership…maybe even have a convo with the service manager if you are able. They are able to make the process bearable especially if you have anywarranty repairs that may take months.

An excellent relationship with a dealer is definitely an advantage.

Dealer notified me today


"Hi there. working on your Jeep. We are replacing the right side cylinder head per Chrysler. Should have parts next week.?"

We will see I guess. You mechanically inclined guys think replacing just the right side where majority of the noise sounded like it was coming from will fix the issue? Or would both side of the head likely be damaged from the issue? I haven't heard their diagnosis on the whistling/sucking sound yet but I will let you know, nor their resolution to the stop start not working.

So they really should be replacing the entire engine? I had a feeling they are trying to skimp. I don't think it's the dealership but their "STAR" recommendation. We shall see I guess... As always thanks @mwilk012 for your timely and informative responses.

Well, if this repair fails, you’d qualify for a buyback at least. So if that’s something you’re interested in, that’s good.

How does the buyback work? Is that an automatic option with Jeep or do I have to battle them through the lemon law? I know the lemon law in Florida is three times. This would only be the second replacement/repair for the same issue.

Ironically, they put me in a 2021 gladiator with the same 3.6 and approximately the same miles. I had them sitting side by side and I would have swore mine was a diesel.

I’m the last guy to ever suggest such a thing, but engine repairs just have to be done right or the vehicle will never be reliable.

It was over 30 days on the first repair. Thank God I bought the unlimited mile 7-year warranty. I never buy extended warranties but somehow my gut told me to buy it.

Since you are under warranty (extended warranty) if they replace the entire block it should be new and not rebuilt. If they eventually go this route, as they should, be sure to get confirmation in writing…a text or email with the service manager agreeing to the fact that the replacement engine will be brand new and not refurbished.

I also would reach out to @JeepCares for a customer service rep and explain your concerns with this individual head repair.

You should voice concerns that you believe the long block should be replaced as others have mentioned.

Your customer care rep will reach out to the dealership to have a discussion as long as the jeep is currently at a dealer with an open ticket they will have the discussion.

As Wilk said, the dealership’s solution is not really a good one. The block should be replaced. See if you can also have this conversation, calmly, with the Service Manager at the dealership before you reach out to JeepCares about it tho.
