Looking for a little reassurance on a DIY project. Made a small platform with an Apache (Pelican wannabe) case on top and then strapped to spare tire - similar to the RockSlide product.
I have a 23. Rubi with the MOPAR reinforced tailgate system (hinges are not upgraded), with the OEM XR 315/70 17s.
I weighed my box and DIY rack loaded with the gear I’m taking out to CO/UT and the all in weight is 27lbs. Am I push my luck? Is that too much weight!
Thanks

I can’t find it anymore and only saw it once in an advertising brochure for the Mopar reinforcement. 103 lbs is the max.

Ok, thanks
I’m not sure what the total weight is of the OEM wheel/tire combo

I see people running with (2) 2 gallon Rotopax on the spare, which would be 24 lbs just in fuel + the weight of the containers and RS racks. Maybe I just answered my own concern šŸ˜‰

The JL tailgate is made of significantly thicker and stronger metal than the JK. That's the one that had tailgate bending problems that really needed reinforcement.

I'm actually not as concerned with the weight as I am with the pieces of sheet metal going into the tire at each side. Constantly jostling with that blunt knife edge on the tire may cause some damage over time. I'd be more comfortable if there was a bend on that edge so it has a much wider footprint on the tire.

Thanks for the input, maybe I should put a strip off rubber on those 2 edges where they make contact with the tire - like that door guard stuff they sell. I was thinking I needed a little ā€œbiteā€ to secure it

I'm pretty sure the "legs" under the straps has a flat bottom. That's more than enough "contact patch" to support the weight of the rack without damaging the tire. The pieces of metal along side the strap would only secure it front to back and aren't putting much pressure on the tire.
