Hi folks! I am an avid competitive clay shooter, and I'm looking for some ideas to out fit my incoming JL Willys. Most of my other hobbies have easy solutions (bike rack, roof rack for skis, etc) but this is a bit more off the beaten path. Often when I arrive on site for a shoot, my vehicle is used as a staging area and place to wait in all manner of weather until it's my turn. Some guys have built up Sprinter vans as little work shops and hangouts, but I have a vision of making use of the tailgate system for a table/rack and eventually an awning system to replicate this experience.

My google-fu has failed me and I've been unable to find a vertical rack solution that would attach to the tailgate. Keep in mind this is not for proper secure storage and wouldn't be used for actual transportation, just as a temporary resting place. I see that UTVs seem to have some options for a solution like I'm describing (image attached) though they are secure enough to drive around with and I wouldn't require that ability. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I think you'll need to go custom DIY, or at least partial DIY. I can't find what you're looking for either.

I'd look at wall mount racks that could be attached to a small board that can hang off the spare and be strapped down to the tire. Just a board with blocks on the back that rest on the spare's 10 & 2 o'clock positions to hold the weight and a ratchet strap across to insure it doesn't slip off. Maybe a 1" board across the bottom so it rests squarely on the tire.

Once used a ski rack that mounted to the spare and carried skis vertically. Carried skinnier nordic skis that would strap to the rack on to both sides of the spare. Anyway, if you found something like that, you could substitute shotguns for skis.

Another approach would be to get a molle panel for the inside of the tailgate. Surely there are shotgun mounts that would mount to a molle panel. My AAL tailgate Versatable has a molle panel on the bottom so when the table is closed (up position) it's ready for gun mounts.

Thanks for the ideas and suggestions. I was hoping to mount them to the inside of the tailgate, leaving the gate swung open, table deployed, and creating a bit of a prep area. The outside/tire mount idea, if secured, could make a cool system for carrying them upland for some wing shooting.

Since the Jeep is going to basically be my vehicle for outdoor hobbies, I'm absolutely up for investigating a custom solution. I'm not overly handy with this type of thing myself but I have some buddies that could probably make me something cheap and cheerful that would get it done.

When I eventually sort out an answer I'll come back and post a pic of my setup incase anyone else wants a range setup idea for themselves!
