I have 10K on my 21 JLUR, and on hard acceleration, I still get this smell. I've chalked it up to the catalyst doing its thing. It smells a little plastic-y. I've been under it many times, and no signs of any burning or anything unusual.
Good to know I'm not the only one experiencing this. Frustrating when the dealer looks at you like they have never heard of this, neither can they replicate it. ?

Yes - some related threads below, and the issue I was also asking about - "curious if anyone with this problem has also noticed severe exhaust smell when putting the engine under heavier loads (e.g. climbing long steady hill on highway) in 3rd and 4th gears? wondering if these are related. it's almost a clutch burning smell (under high loads, not the hiccup) but there is no noticeable increase in rpm at a steady speed (50-65mph)."

Some other threads similar:

Has anyone else experienced a strange smell on hard acceleration (passing / getting on a highway)? This is not a typical catalytic converter (hard boiled/rotten eggs), but a burn type. Wife says it smells like electrical wire burn. I think it's just a warm metal smell. Regardless strong enough to be irritating and only happens on hard acceleration (~high 5/6k RPMs). This has an automatic.

If so, do you know what's causing it?

Thanks.

That was my original thought knowing that most metal items have some type of preservative on it to prevent rust while on the self/ warehouse. I figured though after two years (28k miles) it'd be burnt off. ??
No. Incompletely burned gasoline.

Had something similar happen the other day.I passed a car, accelerated to about 75 mph when a noticeably warm and burnt chemical smell came from the air vents.Weird.....It was gone as fast as it came, and the air turned cool with the normal air-conditioned smell.

Were you romping hard on a 392, with a friend riding with you? Might be time for an underwear check! ?

I notice a smell in the mornings when I get on the interstate. Doesn’t last long. Don’t notice it any other time. The ramp getting on is uphill & fairly long. Good to hear that it sounds fairly common. Been meaning to ask on here, but since it happens on the way to work, I don’t think about it until the next morning. Thanx for bringing this up. Mine is ‘22 6-speed manual.

Anybody ever figure this out? My 2019 JL auto still does this. Passing someone or getting up to speed on the interstate gives a strong burning smell. Only on heavy acceleration

I think that this makes the most sense from what I have seen - but also not a mechanic.... and also have had this on a manual 3.6 and auto 2.0 - and both only under hard acceleration and with soft and/or rear windows down.

Yes. I have a very noticeable exhaust smell under heavy loads or acceleration. And only at probably 35 mph or more. But only with the rear windows out or top down. This allows the exhaust to circulate into the cabin.

I believe this is due to the enrichment that happens at higher RPMs, just above our hesitation or "hiccup" in the power band, and at higher load. If you go dig up the threads about the 3.6 torque curves and the threads about aftermarket programming, they talk about the enrichment a bit .

I don't believe that this is a problem per say... It's just something that we are in a unique position to notice.
