I’ve recently bought my first Jeep wrangler 2.0L overland which is brill but the stop start never works. The main dealer says it’s fine and there are a list of reasons that stop it from working such as outside temp etc.
I’ve run it in warm conditions with no functions operating and it still does not work. I don’t like the stop/start system anyway but it should be functional. Does anyone else have the same issue?
P.s. The new custom made quad pipe exhaust system is subtle but sounds cool.

Mine does. It’s the JL overland 2.0L. The manual and main dealer confirmed it and the dash has the stop/start on/off switch.

As in Barnsley England, or somewhere else outside the U.S. ? I haven’t heard of this edition, I don’t have the answer, but as you already said, the owners manual lists about 50 reasons that preclude start/stop from operating.

Yours is a plug-in hybrid? Or the regular gas-only 2.0T? Sorry, not familiar with a Wrangler Overland. The only Overland I've seen is a Cherokee/Grand Cherokee.

Did you buy it new or used? If used, maybe the owner before you disabled the Stop/Start?

Standard 2,0L petrol gas guzzler. Fortunately the wife has a smaller car that doesn’t empty the bank account. In the Uk these are rare and I like to be different.
good point about the previous owner possibly disabling the stop/start. Guess I will never know unless one day it decides to work.

On my JLUR if I scroll through the various displays in the instrument cluster, it will say why ESS is unavailable. Usually says something like "outside temp" or "battery charging".

In most cases, ESS not working is an indication of a battery (main and/or Aux) health/charge issue. However, not the only reason like others have mentioned.

I'd first recommend doing some battery testing to understand if that is the reason. There are numerous existing threads on this forum covering this exact subject in great detail.

I'm afraid my ESS has consistently worked without fail for the 7 years I've owned my JLU. I'm on my 2nd set/pair of batteries. I also auto-disable ESS like many others because it serves no purpose for my jeep needs.

Mine is a 2021 model. Will it have the same instrument cluster as yours?

Thanks for all your input. Under my second hand purchase warranty the secondary battery was changed. The main dealer has also checked both the batteries health and passed these as ok. On manual cars such as my wife’s mini the stop start works well as it comes in as you depress the clutch which gives you time to select the gears and move off normally. On my last BMW 640 the stop start was frustrating as it engaged as you pressed the accelerator thereby giving a delayed start. As such I disabled it. I assumed the same would apply to my Jeep so I’m not too concerned but would like it to be functional in case the next owner wanted it.

The 4xe does not have stop start. Please verify which vehicle you have. Overland is not a trim that I'm aware of, it's a Grand Cherokee trim.

That being said, dealer scan tool can tell you exactly why your S/S isn't working. It reads out each required parameter individually.

odds are you have a (5+ year old?) Main battery whose condition is not good enough to maintain the voltage necessary for the ESS to function. if the Aux Batt was replaced because it was bad, ideally, the Main Batt should have been replaced at the same time as it was probably already compromised by the failed Aux Batt.

not sure which options you may have on your model to monitor ESS faults and/or Voltage, but it would help if you can tell us what error messages you're getting on the Start/Stop screen (like, if it's still indicating that it's still charging?), or if your voltage is indicating that it's staying high (14+V) and not dropping down to a decent nominal level (~13V) at an idle.

would help to know more about your use case too; is it in short-hop duty? or does it routinely get on the road for long enough to come to a fully charged state?

If the IBS SOC estimate (which technically is a CR[an]K battery only measurement) is less than 65%, the ESS EVIC status will read "Stop/Start Not Ready" (no reason/error). It's entirely possible for IBS SOC percentage to hover in the 60s for long periods if the vehicle is primarily short tripped, meaning ESS won't become available and no error message will be displayed.

If forum anecdotes are a reliable indicator, this situation commonly occurs in JLs with batteries that are neither brand new nor so old they're unreliable for starting the engine.

How do you find the ESS status. Searched the dash computer unit and can’t find anything that relates to it?
