Chemicals... you guys are over thinking it with the hunt that leads you to expensive brands. Soapy wash and wax is age old tried and tested. I'm all for magic potions but other than those that are solvents (not what we want here), stick with soapy water... and wax if you are so inclined depending on the surface you are prepping. You will not get in the position of trying to repair damage caused.

Unless he is using something that is damaging the wheel he shouldn’t have to. Should hold up better than this. I’ve seen guys with the same issu on 4Runner forum, it was from hand sanitizer.
I work in the auto industry (not steering wheels but other interior parts).

The most damaging things to leathers (and less so vinyls) by far are:
1) Sun screen
2) Bug repellant
3) Anything alcohol based like hand sanitizer

Makeup and stuff cleans off , the above are the ones that actually damage the material.

My conclusion is based on the failures I have seen in the lab. These are always the first ones to fail before other stuff.

Don't put anything slippery on the wheel to condition it.

Agreed. To clean any part of my interior, such as the steering wheel, I just dilute APC and wipe it down. Steering wheel looks like new, as does my old JKs that belongs to my dad now. As they say, “keep it simple, stupid.” All purpose cleaner will clean anything on your Jeep, just gotta make sure it’s diluted properly for the task.

Cleaning and long term protection are apples and oranges. Yes cleaning it will remove dirt and grime that can over time wear away at it, but conditioning it will keep it nicer/protected for much longer.

If one cleans their steering wheel mildly every month or two, which takes literally minutes, it'll always be nice and there'll be no reason to "protect" it. I'm not sure how that's apples and oranges, especially given this will keep it like new for a long time.

Lightly cleaning will not protect from UV exposure. Also with a barrier between the grime on your hands and the wheel it will also help jee the grime from absorbing as much into the leather. Cleaning it will just remove the grime already there, hence the apple as to oranges. Cleaning it is only half the battle.
