I know it's a TSB & not a recall....has anyone had luck getting a dealer to replace the aluminum steering box with the steel steering box after warranty period has expired?

I'm closing in on 100k and the steering is super light, vague and loose. I have almost no relationship with the dealer other than recall issues (still waiting 2 months for my replacement clutch parts to arrive after they said they ordered them) and I didn't purchase my Jeep from them.

Basically stock 2018 Sport S MT w/ 99,970 miles

thanks

I'm sure any dealer will apply that TSB if you state the issue as mentioned in the TSB. If you're asking if they'll do it for free then nope. Stellantis won't reimburse the dealer and the dealer won't eat the cost. Maybe someone will prove me wrong but it would be a non-reimbursable cost to the dealer.

Well...yeah, that's what I was getting at. I'd have my independent garage do it if there was no cost advantage to using the dealer.

I just don't know that this would be the best use of $500+ of my money when I have a major DW issue that keeps me from being able to confidently drive at highway speeds. According to the TSB it won't help DW.

I'm in a similar situation as you, 2018 Sport, and the previous owner didn't get the TSB done during the warranty period. Called a few dealerships and they had ridiculously high quotes $1500+. Not going that route lol

I had mine done just outside Warranty. The dealer had a program where i paid $100 as a co-pay and it was completed. Worked well for me.

I thought there was a recall on that. But may have been a different year

If you've been experiencing a serious DW problem, the TSB isn't going to address that on its own.

I'd imagine you've gone through some of the countless threads discussing solutions for this... stabilizer, ball joints, etc. If you haven't already had either replaced, start there.

Yes, I understand this TSB isn't intended to address DW. My go-to independent mechanic feels that this is a contributing issue.

So far I've done: SS, Track Bar, Ball Joints, new Tires, Alignment, Balance Tires.....going back in on Tuesday to a different independent mechanic (JLR owner) to look for other causes of DW (tie rod ends maybe).

I'm having a real hard time making an argument to my wife that I'm keeping this jeep forever when I can't in good conscience take my family on the highway (in my daily driver)...

About how much wander are you all referencing? Ive a 2018, and I had the stabilizer done with the recall, but nothing to the steering box as far as i know. I also bought mine used. I didnt even find out about the steering box thing until a few months ago.

FWIW, I waited about the same 2 months for my clutch as well. Dealer ordered before the Holidays and contacted me last Friday to schedule the appointment. Dropped it off Tuesday morning and picked it up Thursday afternoon.

My steering is very light and sloppy. But honestly I wouldn't complain about it if it was my only issue (it's a Jeep thing). I was looking at it as part of my larger DW issue.

I took a road trip in my Dad's 2018 rubicon last weekend (only has 15k miles on it) and was amazed at how much better the steering feel was. He still has the aluminum box so it's mostly a function of his very low miles.

You've covered a lotta bases... for the parts you replaced, are they aftermarket?
