They are popular on tractors as well. I use one. They can cause injury in higher speed crashes. Not just impalement (air bag should protect) but when you hit something that forces your steering wheel to spin a bit violently. Race car drivers are taught to take your hands off the wheel or at least palms only, during impact so you don’t break your thumbs.
Good point. Just like you're not supposed to wrap your thumb around the wheel when driving anything intense.

But then again, maybe people getting their thumbs broken by that is nothing but an old wives tale?

If in doubt, talk to those in the NASCAR world. I’m not a better but will bet their training is not based on an old wives’ tale.

I completely agree no thumbs off road, but I believe this is the first comparison of a Jeep to NASCAR!!
