Speaker on Rear carrier - purpose?

Started to put my new spare tire carrier on and in the process I ran into the small speaker stuck up under the tire carrier (part #685296554aa). What is this for? I am not sure I have heard the Jeep transmitting sound. Is it for Jeeps that go to countries I think some require electrics to emit sound so people know it’s coming.

More importantly do I need it? Can I unplug it for the new tire carrier? Not sure there is a place to mount it on the new setup. Or will electronic chaos ensue and it will render the Jeep a giant brick?

New carrier installed… speaker eliminated, however, grinder needed to save lugs….

Legally, it's basically the equivalent of third brake light. Will you get pulled over? probably not. Is it illegal to not have one on a vehicle able to move 100% electric, yes.

Original remounted, took some work. May move to the optional ice cream truck sound track however.

I originally thought that the speaker itself generated the sound, but actually the two wires going to it are analog speaker signal. The Body Control Module actually generates the sound - So the sound could actually be changed with software update depending on legal requirements in different markets.

BTW, this sound requirement only became federal law in 2019.

Soooo what you're saying is we need a software engineer to splice in our noises of choice?
Perhaps we'll see something like this make it's way over to the 4xe in the future.

I gotta be honest, I can’t stand the fact that the next charger is gonna be an EV, but at least they’re ‘trying’ to give it a voice.

The 4xe is different because it still has a 2.0 Turbo to make real noises with. I’m actually waiting on a crawler style muffler to replace the stock axle back (mostly because it’s starting to corrode already but I don’t wanna bash it up and have a harder time pulling it off too). The whole speaker box thing is more for parking lot “don’t sue me” noise. I’d just like to see it not suck for a change like most EV’s. ?‍
