just a general question...when purchasing after market wheels and tires, do you go with a 5th rim to match the other 4 or just a generic rim that's the same size as the 4, (same size tire of course) to keep the cost down. just curious what people do. Thanks agin

It just looks right to have 5 matching wheels and tires. In the old days, on CJs and YJs, they would come from the factory with a non matching steel wheel and a cheap temporary spare tire. That's the time when spare tire covers became popular, so that the ugly spare would be covered.

If you don't want to buy an expensive wheel for a spare, you're better off getting 5 less expensive wheels that match. That's my opinion anyway.

If you don't want to buy an expansive wheel for a spare, you're better off getting 5 less expensive wheels that match. That's my opinion anyway.
Appreciate it, this is a 3rd vehicle to travel the back fireroads of Idaho to go fly fishing. My jeep isn't lifted (don't have a desire too). Wound only use it as a spare, and would also cover it for sun damage.

You sound like a pragmatic individual. So why are you changing the wheels in the first place?

Most do 5 matching wheels and tires. If you're not doing 5 tire rotations then it's up to you, but you would definitely want the 5th tire to be the same as the 4 drive axle tires in case of emergency.

Spot on

A matching spare tire/wheel, and 5-tire rotations, are a must-do in my opinion. These are some of the benefits:
  1. Your tire set will last 25% longer.
  2. Your spare will always have about the same treadwear (and thus, the same diameter) as the others
  3. Your spare will never be an old, rotten, or mismatched tire because you'll typically be replacing it at the same time you replace the other 4.
The only downside is that (as you noted in the first post) you have to buy a 5th wheel to go with it.

You do also spend 25% more every time you buy a new set of 5 tires instead of just 4, but that's really a wash, since you'd also be buying new sets 25% less often.

This is called "getting cheap at the last minute"
New Cadillac owners used to die of heat inside their brand new Caddies as they would cheap out at the last minute and not order air conditioning but also didn't want to look cheap so they'd always have the windows up regardless of how many hundreds of degrees it was getting inside the new car.
Why the F would you buy 4 out of 5 wheels for your Jeep anyways ? ?
