How about moving the spare inside like the old jeeps and broncos and blazers. Make it a small steel wheel and tire. Just something to get you home. You put the spare on the front and matching tires on the rear so no posi issues. Maybe make a roll bar mount in right rear corner. Rear seat would have to be removed on my 2 door of course. But I removed my 2 door rear seat on day 1.

However, the spare can act as an energy absorbing safety feature in a rear end collision, and I'll keep it for that reason..
I think the opposite, the spare makes the rear more vulnerable because the tire sticks out past the bumper. A small collision and the rear glass shatters and flies everywhere and very dangerous if passengers in back seat. tailgate and top is ruined. There in No impact protection built in to the spare tire area. The spare can also enter the vehicle also very dangerous.
With no rear spare, a collision hits the bumper and trailer hitch much stronger and acts as intended As the energy is low and at the frame level.
