So I have the upgraded alpine system.
I do not like it at all.
Even at max volume, it's not loud enough for me. I had a very nice system in my JK, was only able to grab the subwoofer after my accident.

I did not like uconnect in my JK, and mostly will not like it in my JL.
Is it fairly easy to replace the stereo and speakers? Add some amps and sub?

Reason I ask, I heard someone say it's difficult to upgrade the sound once alpine is in the jeep. Not sure what they meant.

Also I noticed that randomly, the left channel cuts out for a few seconds. I'm guessing loose wires at the amp or uconnect..

You can replace the HU. There are a couple of options. Insane Audio has a replacement HU that is pretty much plug and play. I am unsure if it will play nice with the factory backup cam. You can use an iDatalink Maestro with one of the shallow mount double DIN HU's but the factory cam is digital and they will only take an analog input. Metra Axxess has a kit that will work with a Pioneer HU and has a camera but you will loose the fader. Then there is the Alpine Restyle and those are even pricier. I ended up going with a Quart stage 6 with the drop in subwoofer kit and I am very happy with it. The PAC AmpPro gets you three pair of clean line outs that Quart uses to power the speakers. If my factory 8.4 goes bad, I will replace it with the JL4001 or the Alpine but for now its good.

I want to put new stereo possibly, as I'm sure the sound source on factory head unit are not great.

Mainly I want to add audiofrog component speakers, and my kicker subwoofer.

This seems interesting.

I do notice that dual zone climate control is not incorporated into this?

I’m not that familiar with the head units, but can attest to the alpine being awkward to upgrade. I believe they “tune” the channels and it doesn’t take kindly to trying to wire it straight to an amp. That’s why people use the PAC-amp.
I used a Rockford fosgate Dsr-1 which I believe they stopped making. It is fairly well integrated but still has some electronic quirks, and I’m afraid to change the settings on the app as some people have trouble connecting over Bluetooth.
If starting over I would look more into a head unit and build from there, or just go with PAC-amp and an amp with DSR built in (I’m thinking like a JL vx1000/5i or audiocontrol d-5.1300), you would likely have better/more updated software support than what I’m doing.
