Why is a software update needed when you go from the aluminum steering box to the steel steering box like in the TSB 08-074-20 ?

I ask as my wife’s 2018JLU exhibits the issues and I am planning to change the steering box. I have called 3 dealers and each one takes my number but does not call back. I guess they are making so much money these days they don’t care.

They aren't built the same, makes sense it would take a different amount of pressure or run time or who know what to get the turn assist set properly.

The electro-hydraulic steering setup is strange, and overly complex.

I can get the parts on-line for much less than the local dealer. Would it be safe to install them, drive to dealer for the software change?

No they’ll almost certainly tell you to F off.

your best bet is to buy all of the parts and print out the TSB, then ask them if they can do the listed instructions without screwing it all up.

We are about to find out. I ordered the parts today. Will install when they arrive then go in for a software update. Based on what they told me today I will be out 600 rather than the 1200 they want to do turn key job.

I will post the results once complete.

I thought the TSB was covered work.

No TSB provides extended warranty coverage unless explicitly stated. If you're outside of warranty, then its just another repair.

I had my box changed and I still have play in the steering, is there a way to tell if they did the software update?

Check your work order/invoice to see if they actually applied the software update.

There should be a line that says something like "COMPLETED EPS FLASH UPDATE FROM OLD PART NUMBER 68298610AC TO 68529416AA" if they did the software update.

I still have a very small amount of play in my steering wheel after having the TSB done (maybe half inch either way), but it's considerably better than before the update.

I was quoted $1,200 which is why I bought the parts for approx 400, will do the labor myself and pay the dealer 200 to apply the software.

Then your dealer either screwed up or is very nice.
?‍♀ They’ve been great to work with for the few minor things I’ve had. When I brought it in they just said their service tech was aware and it was no problem. They had the parts and it’ll all be covered under manufacture warranty. I didn’t question it.

I wish somebody somewhere knew and could explain why the steering system needed a software update. I understand that the power assist is in communication with the computer, but it is hard to guess what could be so different inside a steering box that the Jeep would require a software update.

I am not saying it's not true that the update is necessary or advisable, I am just wondering what the heck it amounts too.

Thank you for asking.

It seems a shame that Jeep doesn't appreciate that an informed customer can be a happy customer.

I don’t believe that the gear ratio is any different between the former aluminum box, but the valving internally must be.
