Please know that I'm not pooping on this project, but I just don't know what it's for. You end up with a 60% rear seat delete and some storage room under the board where the right-hand rear seat used to be, which is cool. But why the flat panel all the way back to the tail gate?
No worries, I had to think about this for months to figure out how to do this and even why. What it does is open up the back cargo area quite a bit and even gives some storage in the footwell area where the 60% seat was at. It works as a sleeping platform, too, which is what I originally wanted it for. If the back seats had folded down completely flat, like in the old station wagons, there would have been no need for it at all. It’s flat all the way to the tailgate simply to give a level and straight surface.

Thanks for the explanation! It seems like there would be need for it, tho -- the seats are heavy and huge, and the volume of the headrest and seat top are very considerable. That is, the storage under the flat board isn't negligible.

I'm going to be doing a long over-landing trip and I want to remove the rear seats, so I've been trying to figure out if I want to replace them with anything. The Goose Gear site doesn't have a ton of information and is quite confusing ... and the prices are outrageous. They look great, but a few panels and brackets for more than $2000? Come on, now.

The board in the back seems great for sleepin' in, since you don't want to have the ridges and lumps. And I understand there are some studs protruding from the frame to mount the rear seat mechanisms even after they're removed. So I'm not sure what I'll do to cover things up and smooth things out, but I don't want to spend a ton ...

Here is another option I considered from Springtail Solutions. It’s thin enough that the board all the way to the back is unnecessary. Still more than I wanted to spend, though.

Looks great, but their website is down and their online store is in disarray. OTOH, that looks much simpler than the full-back solution you've made, so maybe I can fabricate something like it.

Here it is six months later and I can’t help but change it up. Time to add some access hatches and make the piece that covers where the 40% seat goes. Probably take a few more weeks on this as time permits

Rough fit and a few adjustments made. Next I’ll have to work on the hatches. Also, Q. A. cat was close by to make sure I did it right.

Looking forward to your new write-up and the new looks! I like that idea better. We might have a at least of week of free time so this might be a good project. The new brake pads and tires from 4Wheelonline should arrive soon so got to plan the next mod now.

Hatches are installed. I had to get some help with that ā€˜cause it seems my skill level wasn’t up to snuff.

And the carpet is rough cut to fit. I will have a carpet shop bind the edges for me. Next is to paint with a gray bedliner.

This is two coats of Durabak-18 polyurethane bedliner. I bought a gallon, but only used a quart. It’s still damp in the picture, but it shows me that two coats works just fine. I’ll let it sit and cure until Sunday when I’ll start to fit it in my Wife’s ā€˜23 JL.U.

Except for a few small areas to touch-up this is the completed project.

I let the paint cure and mounted it today. Fit is good and the rug really sets it off. Thanks for checking out my little project šŸ˜Ž
