ring and pinion gear are about 150 to 300 bucks an axle, depending on axle type (not including install labor if you need to pay someone to do the job). Not sure how you can spend 160 bucks for a couple of quarts of gear oil but about 8 bucks buys a quart of Valvoline synthetic gear oil.

I would regear regardless if you off road or not.
I read a post a while back from a pretty hardcore off roader that was running 35s, and after 10k miles his stock gears and carriers were pretty toasted.

it is a 40k+ jeep, so $1500-2000 to not destroy your gears, carriers, trans, driveline and everything in-between over time is a pretty small price to pay.

Sorry, it is a peeve of mine seeing people running 35s on dana 30/35 with stock gears and saying the shit is the bomb digs

Here’s a screen shot from Northridge. The aftermarket gears haven’t hit for the JL yet so it’s DANA/spicer. Also get to get the master install kit even though you don’t need much in there.

Amsoil is $20 per qt. 4 qts initial and 4 qts after 500 miles. You can cheap out but I haven’t seen $8 synthetic. Best case is around $16 for valvoline.

Really? Two ring and pinion sets with install kits is $1,000?? Jesus Christ...last time I did a JKU the ring, pinion, and install kits were around $250 per axle and there were about four different brands to pick from.
The price will come down when the aftermarket starts offering other options. JK had a plethora of options available.

Buy a master rebuild kit and add another 300$ per axle

Adding aftermarket gears will have zero impact on the issues you are stating. In actuality, the larger 3.45 gears would stand up to hard wheeling/being beaten on better.

I don't think you need to regear. Put the new tires/wheels on and see how it feels.

Regearing a JL is expensive. The Rings & Pinions plus install kits will run you close to $1100 alone. You are looking at $800-2000 in labor depending the shop/where you are located. The people saying a shop should only charge 2-4 hours of labor for a regear are talking out of their asses.

Like I said, I've bought several ring, pinion, and master install kits and I've never spent more than $250 per axle total. I've used Yukon, FRPP, Motive, etc. in the past. Apparently the JL stuff went WAY up in price, which is ridiculous since it's a slightly tweaked design, with the exact same type of setup.

If a person spends that much on labor, they should have gone somewhere else. If a shade tree mechanic can do regears in a residential garage on a Saturday morning, it should NEVER take a professional shop 8+ hours to do them. That's speaking from personal experience doing them on Jeeps, Toyotas, and muscle cars...not talking "out my ass".

For a front and rear differential regear you are looking at a 9 book hour job. Can someone complete it quicker than that? Yes. Usually takes a shop about 6 hours to complete it.

In the Chicagoland area, the lowest labor charge for a regear is $800. Add the parts at the lowest known price (little shy of $1,100 through Northridge) and you are close to $2,000 for the regear.

Most shops in the area are charging $1500+ for labor. Buy the parts through them and you are looking at over $3,000 for a regear...

Looks like even Quadratec is selling the genuine Spicer kits for $544 front and rear (this is 4.88 ratio, there are others that are available for the same or similar money). Since JLs are so new, some parts can be reused, but even if you bought full install kits you're not going to spend another $500 bucks.

As far as labor goes, if anyone in this thread gets quoted 9 hours for a ring/pinion job...bring it to my garage. We'll do it in 8 (it doesn't take that long, but that's what it sounds like some of those shops are charging). I'm not sure how the people who run those shops sleep at night.

But again, the 4.88s I put in one of my prior Wranglers worked out great, but in my JL I really don't see the need unless going 37s or larger.
