Hello Jeep Community!

I'm new to the Jeep world and recently bought a 2021 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited Sport. My Jeep has a Dana 30 front axle and a Dana 35 rear axle with 3.45 gears, based on the build sheet I reviewed. The previous owner installed a 4.5-inch lift kit from Falcon along with 35-inch tires.

Since purchasing it, I've noticed that the Jeep struggles to shift into 7th and 8th gear on the highway, and in 8th gear, it lacks power. After reading through some forums, I’ve learned that regearing to 4.56 might resolve this issue.

I spoke with the dealer I purchased it from (a VW dealership), and they mentioned they could cover the costs if a Jeep dealership could perform the regear. However, after reaching out to several Jeep dealers, I’ve received mixed responses. Some say they aren’t able to do it, while a couple mentioned they might, though they were unsure if the parts would fit.

Could anyone here help guide me in finding the correct Mopar parts to regear from 3.45 to 4.56? Any advice or direction would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Look for Dana-Spicer gear sets and install kits. That's who designed and built the axles before selling them to Jeep.

Better yet, stay away from the dealership. Find a quality 4x4 shop to do the work. Dealer techs tend to not be as good at the job as the people who do that work a lot more often. And the 4x4 shop will probably be cheaper anyway.

My 23 JLUR Xtreme Recon came with 35's and 4.56's. It works marginally. Doesn't hold 8th gear very well at 75 to 80mph. 65mph with a slight headwind and its in 6th and 7th gear. When I ordered it, I knew I was going to go to 37's and 5.13's.
If I was going to spend the money to regear for 35's, without a doubt it'd be 4.88's.
And unless you're 100% sure that you're never going to go to 37's, I'd re-gear to 5.13's with the 35's. 5.13's are only 150 more rpm's than 4.88's.

This 100%.
A member of our Jeep group let the Dealer regear his Jeep. 1st time out on a local trail his ring gear came loose and put a hole in his diff cover.
Find a good shop that everyone takes their gears to and use them.

If you go to a non dealer I’d call them to get their opinion. Any reputable shop will only warranty “their” parts (ie the stuff they order). They’ll tell you what they’re willing to install.

Given the state of dealer service departments, free can end up costing you more in the long run.

The VW dealership is doing the right thing because a Jeep on 35s with 3.45 gearing isn't an acceptable combo, but you're better off paying out of pocket for a 4x4 shop to do the regear. Dealers generally don't do regears, and even if you find one, they don't do many of them because everyone goes to a 4x4 shop.

Can you get a few quotes from Jeep dealerships and then have VW cut you a check and then use the money to buy a set of used Rubi axles (D44 with 4.10) or to pay for a 4x4 shop to do the re-gear of your current axles?

The more I think about it, is the VW dealership offering to pay for a re-gear of the differentials or pay for a calibration of the odometer/speedometer? Seems like before they would offer to pay for a complete re-gear they would just instead slap a stock set of tires on it for you and call it good.

yeah they are paying for the regear and jeep dealerships told them about 2400 for the regear. I know they could have just put stock tire but they are very supportive right now and they are saying they will resolve the issue no matter fact they sold me jeep with 35 inch for the deal

Setting gears is as much an art as a science. It’s best to have someone who specializes in this. It’s like picking a surgeon: You want a doctor who has done the operation not once or twice but hundreds of times.
