I realize I need gear oil, RTV, marking compound, thread loc

my questions is, what other greases are recommended for bearings, etc?

I’ve seen the job done a dozen times and guys are using 2- 3 different compounds and not explaining what they are.

2024 JL S

another question; if I’m leaving the front axel open, does anything additional need to be done to the carrier/ spiders. Jeep only has 5000 miles.

Thanks in advance and, I known, I should have a shop do it; I live in Europe it’s difficult and ridiculously expensive here unfortunately

If you are using the OEM gasket, you will not need RTV. The OEM gasket is rubber encapsulated steel and is re-usable numerous times (unless damaged).
I did not know that, thank you. My jeep is low mileage so I should be good to reuse

I’ll post an update and it’ll either be a picture of my new gears or a new rubicon 😂

I re-used mine 10x before I replaced it and even then it was only for piece of mind. You will be good to go.

I would recommend that you use 75W-140 oil (after break-in) if you are going to be off-roading or towing. You can skip the break-in and heat cycles if you have your gears REM Isotropic polished. I had two sets done and had zero break-in needed (still change the fluid at 500 miles though to remove the wear-in metals).

I’m not going to rock crawling, just some muddy/ snowy trails. That’s very interesting though, it makes me wonder how we skip the break-in on our brand new jeeps.. maybe they’re broken in or polished before we get them from the factory?

I assume there is a rudimentary break-in from the factory, but I know that you must break-in a re-gear else you stand a good chance of something failing.

Both @chevymitchell (he did my second set of gears) and @grimmjeeper are well versed in re-gearing and can give you some great advice. @chevymitchell posted a "how to" with good information in it.

Thank you, yes, I’ve seen the how too and it’s boosted my confidence big time, gonna take it slow and collect all the right tools

What’s the final verdict on a truetrac in the front M186? I was thinking about adding one since I already have the dif openbut right now I’m leaning more towards just letting the BLD work upfront. I’m wheeling in snow and mud, no rocks

Don't assume the factory does any real break in.

LOL - yeah...you know what they say, but I have to think that either Dana or FCA is doing "something" given that most people take a Wrangler off the lot and just drive it versus having to do heat cycles on a re-gear.
