I bought one of those "all in one" mechanics sets and kind of regret it. I've found some stuff in there useful but I feel like it's better to buy a quality version of what you need when you need it.

Find a brand you like and start buying up tools when you can. A quality impact and set of sockets and wrenches to start. I've been slowly building up my tools for a couple years now. I have a long way to go but have been able to tackle most of my Jeep projects with what I have now.

Good advise. Tekton makes better quality tools than Husky, Pittsburgh, and other box store brands. But Tekton is lower cost than the big name tools (Snap-on, Matco, etc).

If Craftsman was still a thing, I'd suggest that. My dad swore by those for his workshop when I was growing up. I still have several pieces here and there, but since the Sears debacle, I dunno if the brand still exists or even has the same quality from back in the day.

Things I bring every where are medium sized mechanics set shallow and deep 3/8 drive (about 50 pieces), 2 open ended wrench sets from Pittsburg from 5mm to 25mm(not every size included but covers well), a 18" 1/2" breaker bar, a set of half inch impact sockets from 10mm to 21 (I think), a pair of pliers, Dewalt torques bit set from T5 to T55, and various allen wrenches. I have more stuff at home but don't generally need it. I would build a kit before buying premade set personally.

I started whit all in one also but it was gifted to me by my dad. Since then I updated and added to it by keeping a eye out on sale.
My go to brand now are: tekton, gearwrench, otc and my local box store "high end" brand version.

Knipex for pliers, Napa for 1 offs and Harbor Freight for everything else. When it breaks 5 years latter Harbor Freight at least replaces it. I have incomplete sets of Snap-on, Williams, S&K, Craftsman since they no longer stand behind what they made.

Short list is
2-3lb ballpeen hammer
Knipex pliers wrench 3 piece set
24" pry bar
10 in 1 screwdriver

Long list
M18 Impact and Deep Sockets
17mm, 18mm and 19mm wrenches
Rhino USA Tool Roll

Buy what you need when you need it. With that said, 1/2” drive socket s are great, metric and SAE wrench sets , impact wrench, torque wrenches. , are you trying to build a tool set for on the trail, Or for the garage? I have just accumulated quality tools over time as I need them for specific tasks

Here is everything I keep in my large tool roll. It will cover a lot of mods and repairs. All Tekton for the most part. Great quality tools and price is reasonable.
