I wasn't keen on spending $300 on a basket/shelf so made my own.

- 3/4" inch Home Depot cut board
- Two aluminum flat bars
-Pepboy Interior carpet
-misc hardware

Simple install;
-Remove roof bolts and place flat bars in place.
-place the board with threaded stud through mounting holes and tighten wing nuts.

Yes, literally a 2 minute removal. Can be reinstalled with top off too.

I wont say sturdy, it has "some" flex but doesnt vibrate or shake.
How much weight can it support? I ended up picking up the Fabtech shelf, it's STRONG and looks amazing. Granted, I paid 300+ for it.

Ron, are you selling yourself short?

What I mean to say is do you really have to remove the top to get it out? I ask because I did a similar project that allows me to drop the rear seats and bring the device out through either rear door (assuming that's an Unlimited i.e. 4 door you were working on.)

It seems like once removed from your aluminum flat bars, your shelf, being smaller in width than the sports bar, could be taken out of the rig as I described.

BTW: great job!

In my '08 JKUR I had a full sleeping platform that was as wide as yours and the length was from the back of the front seats, ALL THE WAY FORWARD-to the tailgate-and

I just tilted it 45 deg and removed it thru the tailgate--WITH TOP ON and HATCH UP-

It does come out without removing the top. I put a duffelbag with tent, sleeping bag, fishing gear, and folding chair on it without any worries.

Did you use 1/4" or 1/8" aluminum? The only 1/4" bar I can find is 1" wide, and the 1/8" stuff is up to 2" wide. I'm not sure which is best to use. Do you have any tips/ideas?

The bars are 1/8 thick. Front bar is 1 1/2" and the aft is 1" wide. The front 1" bar will allow you to clear roll bar.
