My Check Engine lamp came on yesterday (2024 Sahara with the 2.0L and 2350 miles). I plugged in my code reader and paired it to the phone. I opened the app and attempted to read the code but I kept getting an error msg that there was no communication with the ECU.

So I removed the ESS overide (Autostop Eliminator) that I have plugged into a ZAutomotive SGW extension cable. Once that was out of the picture, I was able to connect to the ECU and clear the code.

Have any of you experienced this? Is this also required with the SmartStopStart device?

Yes, what you experienced is normal.
When you have the an ECRI security gateway bypass module or av dedicated ZAutomotive security gateway bypass module.... and a SMARTSTARTSTOP unit hooked up in a daisy chain and then you plug your BT scan tool into the OBDll port you will be able to use your BT scan tool.... to clear codes with it ..... and yes, the SmartStopStart unit still does it's deed.

I leave my SmartStopStart unit and ZAutomotive dedicated security gateway bypass module hooked up 24/7/365. Never any issues.... and I scan and clear codes with a BT reader whenever desired..

I don't remember the code number, but it had something to do with a cam position sensor. I am guessing it was just a glitch. Engine was & is running fine. I cleared it and took it for a 10 mile drive and it CEL is still off.

So if an autostop eliminator is installed, will the NY inspection computer be able to “see” past it to read the monitors?

Well, I know the original SmartStopStart unit, offered by forum sponsor @SmartStopStart.com unit has no negative impact on the NYS Inspection. No impact at all. I know this as fact.

Trivia... Presently, installed on my 2018 JL, I have a SmartStopStart unit daisy chain connected with a ZAutomotive, dedicated security gateway bypass. I have had this in play when Ihad the last 3 or 4 NYS Inspections done... an never ever na issue with the State connected computer communicating with my JL or crying foul lets say. I do not have the inspection done at a Jeep dealership.

Important... I do no programming or any battery(s) disconnects in say a month prior and 500+ miles before state Inspection day. IF, I did the JL would not pass state inspection.

@Rhinebeck01 thanks. I will be getting one of those and going back to JSCAN. I will just lose the boost gauge but the next inspection should be much simpler. No to figure out where to put the sgw because I forgot to reinstall it when I installed pods for the Quart Stage 6 upgrade. Right now the lower panel is sitting in the pass seat and the SGW is zip tied to the bracket with a Z Automotive extension cable.

Well, if you enjoy the Tazer JL, delights, there is no reason not to keep enjoying the Tazer JL.

I'd still add JSCAN to your mix...

Just remember a month before next state inspection time to mind your p's and q's so to speak.

Go here and get a holder for your dedicated bypass module or your Tazer Mini. Holder works great, and someday when no longer needed.... you sell and re-coop the $ you spent on it.

I can't answer your question.

Both manufacturers of the ESS units claim that their device is invisible and has no effect on plugging into the OBDII and accessing the ECU. That may be true...... but not in my case with my 2024 Sahara. I was not able to connect my VGate vLinker bluetooth device to the ECU until after I removed the AutoStartStop.

I do find it interesting that the same bluetooth device did not interfere with connecting JScan to my 2020 Sahara.....maybe something has been changed on the 2024 year models?? I had the AutoStartStop connected the same way on both vehicles.

It obviously works fine with the way @Rhinebeck01 has his installed with the ECRI. Currently my ESS eliminator is plugged directly into the SGW. That will change later today with the ECRI arrives in the mail.

So unmarried and removed the Tazer from hers, reset the speedo, turned off the ESS and shut down the TPMS with Jscan while she resets the monitors so I can it past a NY inspection. Once that is done, I will go back and turn the TPMS back on, lower the TPMS threshold and re-enable the ESS and then plug the Tazer back in for the ESS and the boost guage. Per Z Auto i will not have to unmarry and remarry the Tazer if I am only using it for those two features.
