I have a question, about Diff/Axle ID? Don't want to get hung up on tire choices but here it is! Thanks ahead of time. Jeep Wrangler JL Question on LS differential ID JLUSahara (2)

I have a JLU Sahara with the "Anti-Spin" Limited slip option?? With that option the original tires on the Sahara are supposed to be changed from "All Season" Bridgestone's (H/T's) to "All Terrain" Bridgestone's (A/T's) ? Both not great but A/T's better than H/T's for mild off road. My Sahara came with H/T's??? Limited slip on the sticker, did I get it?

Other than driving it off a jack stand or trying to bother the local gas station for a lift and turn tires is there any markings on the Diff'/Axle? Older models had a tag saying Limited Slip this axle supposed to be a Dana 44 M220. Only markings are numbers, no obvious markings like "tags"?? Any ideas or info?

Thanks and Go Jeep!!!

there should be a stamp on the diff cover i think. just climb under there and look around. you'll find something to identify.

I've done that only some numbers on diff. cover and axle tube? I've tried couple web site , Dana/Spicer to see what # mean to no avail, JL too new perhaps?

I think it works as should, when first delivered we had some snow around it seemed it worked? Just confused with Tire type? Would like to see some ID on diff. cover as in old days?

Thanks, Wolfdog, Go Jeep!!!

If your window sticker has it then verify that this option indeed called for those tires and hold yr dealership accountable . Simple as that

If your diff cover is blue then it is a Danna 44

As far as I know if you get the limited slip then you get the dana 44. Mine specially says HD Dana 44 rear axle ‘limited slip anti spin’

You are talking about the sticker right? I think he wants to be able to identify the actual axle to make sure.

I just climbed under a Rubicon and compared. Looked exactly the same so I knew the sticker didn’t lie lol.

You used to be able to go to jeep.com and type in your vin and it’d say what you have

Yes, on the build sheet the LS diff. is listed, The confusion are the tires? So would like a way to really identify that rear diff is LS. According to window sticker and build sheet it is...wrong tires for that option.

I guess wet grass or dirt will have to prove!! lol Thanks guys!!

I understand your concern.

It seems it would be an easy mistake for Jeep to install the wrong tires on your Sahara during assembly.

It seems it would be a harder mistake to ship a D44 “narrow” axle with an open diff instead of a LSD. This is assuming Dana is assembling the axles. This new D44 narrow axle is only available with the LSD. I doubt the Sahara/Sport open diff installed in the D35 even fits the D44 axle housing. Of course I could be wrong.

I would make certain you have a D44 axle installed.

Yes, Jeepsterfreak you are correct. Looks like I have to get the rear up in the air and see what wheels do? Someone suggested spinning wheels I dirt /wet grass and look for 2 tracks I believe that a non LSD axle will sometimes do this anyway depending on conditions? So..?

Series of #'s on Diff cover, non the seem ID to me. I would thik it would be somehow marked w/ LSD for use of right fluids??

Yes, the fluid does require a LSD additive. So you are right about that. It would make sense to have some identifying mark on the axle for LSD.

I honestly wouldn't know how to distinguish an open diff from a LSD if you jacked up the rear axle. Leaving the transmission in gear, the open diff should allow rotation of the tires in opposite direction fairly easily. With a locked diff, you wouldn't be able to rotate the tires unless you are strong enough to turn the engine over also. I suppose a LSD would be somewhere in between. You would be able to rotate the tires but with greater effort than an open diff.

Since the JL has brake lock differential, not sure how easy it would be to "feel" the difference between an open diff and LSD while driving.

On my '12 JKU Sahara the LSD diff was clearly marked. LSD and diff ratio. This diff only has a series of #'s I'm sure they tell the story IF one knew the code! The shape of the cover however is Dana M220 so all should be well. As I said on the complete "build sheet" you can get from Jeep on line with your VIN, both LSD M220 Dana AND stupid "all season" tires listed, gotta trust I guess?

I think in neutral engine off brake lock not an issue... "I think"? If I wasn't so lazy and the weather here in NE didn't stink I'd have this one! I could go to dealer with my thoughts, they'd say "oh ya you have it anyway" I'm sure. They probably could explain the series of numbers at least?? Set them an email about Anti-Spin option and tire choice a week ago, no reply? I bought this Jeep from a new dealer, first time in 20 years! Felt bad but they had what I wanted exactly, my favorite dealer no. This "new" dealer would swap or transfer either so...sold! Might be sorry, dealer is important. New dealer farther away and I have not bought 6 Jeeps from him as the other!!

Go Jeep!!!
