I have the WeatherTech cargo mat and go topless all the time; it doesn’t clip in to anything and it doesn’t budge.
WeatherTech has been great for me. Aside from having to pull the rear seat to get it placed install was a breeze.

You must have a different one than me; there was no “installing” mine, I tossed it in back and that was it.

I have a Canvasback. It velcros down, so it ain't going anywhere.
I did want to say however that topless and windows down, things are more likely to go flying if they're right behind your seat than back by the tailgate.

Sky One open with side windows out and doors off has a closed rear glass window and tailgate. This makes a crazy vortex back there. I lost all but about 3 of my reusable shopping bags on the highway. Rubber cargo mat never moved.

I've got the one for the 2 door, same one that OP would be getting if they went down that route. The mat for the 2 door is secured by fitting between where the rear seat attaches to the pivot bar.

I confess to littering, unintentionally. I lowered the top for the drive home, and the wind in the interior pulled a crumpled Arbys bag out from under the driver's seat. The bag flew up and over the rear seat, and was gone. Had it been safe to pull over and walk back (it wasn't), I'd likely have done so.

Lesson learned.
