I’m not sure if I should be concerned or not after replacing my fuel filter. Vehicle has 8000 miles on it so I decided to do a second oil change and replace the fuel filter. Everything went well until prime time. I hit the start button twice without putting my foot on the brake 8 times using 10 second intervals. Tried to start it but it didn’t fire so instantly turned off the starter. Repeated the prime process 5 more times and the same thing occurred. 5 more times and just as I was about to shut down the starter, it fired up.
Im a little concerned that my high pressure fuel pump had 3 one second intervals with no fuel/lubrication. I use Archoil so I’m hoping that might of helped a little. Car is running fine but I’m wondering if that could have caused some damage.
The other part of this is I don’t know why the priming didn’t seem to work. Read a couple threads and watched a YouTube video. Did I misunderstand the process?
Anyone else had this issue or can comment on what I may have done incorrectly. Thx

Did you return the switch to off?
Foot off the the brake, switch to run for 30 seconds. back to off, repeat 5-6 times.

I prime mine a few times every time and I still have a 30 sec crank session before it starts. I've just accepted it. Mechanics tell me they don't prime customer vehicles at all they just crank away...

The priming cycle is 30 seconds long. You need to press the ignition start button without holding the break, wait 30 seconds, then turn it off, wait 30 seconds and then repeat. 10 seconds is too short.

Regardless, the total number of priming cycles seems largely irrelevant. Ive changed my fuel filters 4 times I believe.

1st - 4-5 priming cycles - sounded like there was no more air - ~10 sec crank until it fired up
2nd - 10 priming cycles - waited regardless of what I was hearing in the fuel lines - ~10 sec crank until it fired up.
Last time - I think I may have primed it close to 20 times as a test to see if it really had any impact. When I tried to start it it still cranked for ~10 seconds before it fired up.

I believe its just programmed to crank for that time regardless of what you do to purge the air.

With my powerstroke, when I change both fuel filters and prime it, I can hear when the fuel lines are filled and primed, and when I start it it fires up immediately.

Its definitely different but it seems normal.

Thanks for the reply’s. A video I watched had no dry crank upon startup so I thought mine would go the same…not to be

That never happens for me
That was a Unicorn. Look how ridiculously happy I am she started right up on #10
I'm guessing i waited 5-10 secs between start button giving fuel pump enough to prime. Lucky, but thats what works for me 👍

I've tried a variety of ways to prime it even letting it sit over night after priming and it still takes longer to start.
