Hey everyone,
What’s the raised smear of either metal or paint that I’ve outlined in red? The very few pics I’ve seen online (which I’m not even sure I was looking at an exact axle to axle comparison) seemed to have that whole surface smooth.

That's just paint. Nothing to worry about. You'll see that on nearly every cover to varying degrees.

Story time…

It is textured paint. My JL had that but it also had some green paint drips on it. No idea where those came from but they looked factory.

Anyway… I decided to “pot” mu sensors so when I pulled my diff covers to do that job, I figured it was a good time to remove that green paint.

I dont remember what I used but it took the green paint right off…..

…. and the textured paint under it. Leaving me with partially smooth and partially textured diff covers.

Then the OCD kicked in.

So of COURSE I just HAD to strip all the textured paint off. Then use my DA sander to rough up the smooth paint underneath and the repaint them with a new coat of Rustoleum textured paint.

I probably have more time and effort into two stock diff covers than anyone in the country.

Only to re install them and cover most of them up with RC diff skids.

The rear looked good when I first put it on.

Is this some trick question? I love pumpkin pie. I never loose sleep over the ooze on my diff.

You better put a set of aftermarket diff covers and possibly even skids pronto!

Nah, just wasn’t sure if it was paint or not
