Blew the rear end middle nowhere, east central Utah. Got to a dirt road after a struggle. AAA came miles off pavement and towed it to Grand Junction, Co. He accepted both an upgrade and a standard card to cover the tow- NC. Also timely considering the distance. Member since 1973, now have Premier. Used seldom, but worth it when needed. ?

Wow. That’s insanity!! Is yours still under warranty? I believe Jeep will reimburse some of that. Also, I don’t know if it would’ve been applicable in that scenario but isn’t there some Facebook group called SoCal Off-road rescue or something like that? I believe it’s a conglomerate of folks who will do rescues and it’s usually free?

Sorry, I’m pretty doped up here so I’m not firing on all cylinders.
Not a warranty issue. This happens when you accidentally let power wire touch ground. It doesnt result in this right away. Its explained in that linked thread. Easy to do. Have to be really cautious with the battery cables.

I’ll add another reason and great experience! We were driving home to CA from a trip in AZ with our dually and 5th wheel toy hauler, when the engine broke down 150 miles from home. I have premier and RV so both were towed home at zero cost. That alone paid for a lifetime of the added premium.

USAA Roadside Assistance is pretty good, with up to four service calls per year. They will tow up to 50 miles, and also offer:
  • Towing from the point of breakdown to the nearest repair shop.
  • Jump-starting your battery.
  • Changing a tire when you have a functioning spare.
  • Unlocking your vehicle if you lock your keys in it.
  • Winching your vehicle if it's stuck on or near a public road.
  • Delivering fuel to you. You'll have to pay out of pocket for the cost of the fuel.
It’s pretty decent coverage for the nominal price.

In Florida, not much is more than 50 miles away - maybe in the middle of the Everglades.

Iā€˜ve had to call them for locking my key fob in my Sport, when I had it, and I called them to come to the house, far out of town, to put my spare on when I was having a physically difficult day. The folks who are contracted around here respond pretty quickly.

AAA still has to contract with local tow companies. And they're chronically under-staffed, and therefore can be reluctant (to say the least) to send their drivers out on a long tow.

AAA is a worthwhile protective measure, but not a magic bullet to make problems go away.
  • AAA can sometimes take a real long time to send someone (in my experience, more often than not)
  • Having AAA coverage doesn't guarantee you a driver.
So, consider AAA a good supplement, but still always be prepared to practice basic self reliance.
That's relevant context. ?

I've availed myself of approx. four tows during the sum of my decades-long AAA membership. In each instance, I've been as impressed with the courtesy and attentiveness of the AAA phone agent as I've been unimpressed with the response time and bearing of the contracted rollback driver. Granted, my vehicles were delivered to where they needed to be -- eventually -- so I don't give the dichotomy in service delivery any thought when the annual renewal comes due.
