That's the fun part, doubly so if you can sneakily put a guest's key fob in a Faraday pouch, and then replace both back in their purse or jacket. Lots of head scratching and the occasional bad word may follow when they try to leave.

Not that I'd know anything about such trickery...

You just gave me some devilish ideas for my next family get together ?

Just curious, but did the fob proximity distance change in recent years?

I can use my fob's remote start and lock/unlock from a pretty far distance, but many times when trying to turn the ignition to acc/run or starting it manually while standing just outside of the vehicle with the fob in my pocket only a few inches from the seat, it'll often give a warning/error saying the fob is too far away. As long as the fob is inside the vehicle or pretty damn close, the ignition works fine every time.

Not really sure why I'd need a faraday cage at home/work if the RFID receiver in the vehicle is already that sensitive to distance.

Big fan of the faraday box, and it's really not an inconvenience at all. Instead of hanging your keys up or throwing them on the kitchen table at the end of the day, you just drop them in the box instead.

When talking about the key alone, you're absolutely right. But the thieves use range extenders that are able to pick up the RFID from inside your house and amplify it inside the vehicle. This makes the Jeep think that the key is inside of it and it will start. Simplified explanation of course, but that's basically what's happening.

I thought amplified skimming of passive consumer-grade RFID was still mostly close range, like inches to maybe a few feet at most. Didn't realize that relay attacks have improved that much in just a few years. Guess where there's a will, there's always a way.

I just had Ravelco anti theft device installed
I was skeptical put when I saw what they went through to accesses the wires I was convinced that to start and drive off with my jeep was not going to to be an easy task
They use a 14 pin plug all black wires put do not use all of them so you could be there for hours tying to figure out the right combo and if you jump the wrong ones or cut the lumen with the jeep in the run potion you blow fuses
I also have a tazer and can program in a pin and a farady bag
I know that if my jeep gets stolen I will only get half of whats its worth and nothing for the upgrades and here in California my policy will probably get canceled
With well over 30k in parts and the cost of the new jeep. $700 is a small price to pay to keep my jeep
Tow trucks? I always park in a hard to get to location and outside my motel window
Anybody have the Ravelco and whats your thoughts on the system

I use the Tazer. I agree that it's easy to unplug it and drive off, but I disagree that any thief will know to look for it. It's better than nothing and a determined thief will find a way to steal it no matter what you've done to protect it.

Check out brawler fab to help resolve that....makes it that much harder to unplug.

My
They don’t seem to work with the Wrangler though, and even less with the newer Uconnect 5 on the 2024 models ?

otherwise that’d be spot on
My 2021 with Tazer works great..with that being said the pin doesn't work well with the clutch. Is doesn't give the count down. They r working on a fix

Unconnect has a jeep tracking option I use that.

I also had a Ravelco installed and couldn't agree with you more. Peace of mind alone makes this a worthwhile investment. I also use a Faraday Pouch and got used to it quickly. Both I think are great deterrents to consider.
