I wonder how many bitter tears would be shed by consumers if the OEMs offered, or returned to, a physical key-only model in order eliminate the scourge of key fob cloning, and by extension, the related automotive theft trends.

Said differently, would consumers' devotion to convenience (one-click unlocking, etc.) be so inflexible as to willingly trade away demonstrably improved security? Personally, I think that would be the market's exact preference. To be fair, the OEMs could show a bit of good will in acknowledgement here by, for example, providing free Faraday pouches with the two fobs that usually accompany a vehicle purchase.
